KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team split its first two games at the Rebel Spring Games on Saturday. The Profs lost 5-4 in eight innings against the Coast Guard Academy and shut out Lake Forest College, 12-0 in five innings.
Coast Guard’s Kristine Kahl was the winning pitcher. She gave up seven hits and three earned runs. Right-hander Krysti Maronski (jr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/GCIT) took the loss.
The Bears were led by catcher Jessie Richardson and shortstop Morgan Kingston each with two hits and one RBI. Richardson produced one double and scored one run. Designated player Kelsey Gray chipped in with two hits (four at bats) and one run scored. In the eighth inning, pinch runner Kelly Grills scored the winning run.
For the Profs, first baseman Stephanie Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) was three for four at the plate with a double and a home run. Catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) registered one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) had one hit and one run scored. Pinch runner Christina Lee (fr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) scored one run.
Coast Guard went up 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Rowan trailed by one after two runs in the third. Shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) got on base with a walk and later scored on an error. Meagan Lee knocked in Arcella with a single through the left side. The Profs knotted the score in the fifth inning with Labas’ homer. The two teams exchanged runs in the sixth. Christina Lee crossed the plate on an error while pinch runner Tara Larkin also scored because of an error.
Right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) threw four innings against Lake Forest for the victory. Miller (3-2) only allowed three hits. Righty Beth Ann Hyland (fr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) pitched the fifth inning. The losing pitcher was Molly Thomsen. She went 2.2 innings and gave up four earned runs.
Designated player Ashley DeYoung (fr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills), right fielder Katie Bussman (so. Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) and second baseman Alysa Romero (so. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) all posted three RBIs. DeYoung had two hits, one double and two runs scored. Bussman compiled two hits, one home run and two runs scored. Romero also recorded a homer. Meagan Lee totaled three hits in three at bats and scored two runs.
Snead contributed with two hits (two at bats) and one RBI. Third baseman Jess Phillips (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.), center fielder Shannon Costello (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) and Arcella each had one hit and one run scored. Labas tallied one hit (three at bats) and two runs scored. Pinch hitter Hannah Shontz (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) produced one hit and one RBI.
Rowan (5-3) plays Otterbein University (OH) and Augsburg College (MN) at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. respectively on Sunday, March 17.
