Softball Starts The Season At Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Rowan University softball team started the season at the Virginia Wesleyan College Beach Blast on Friday.  The Profs lost the first game against Allegheny College, 4-2 and won the second, 7-3 over Wilkes University.

The Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast continues on Saturday.  Rowan (1-1) plays Neumann University at 10 a.m. and William Peace University at noon.

Right-hander Caitlin Nealer was the winning pitcher for Allegheny.  She pitched a complete game and only allowed two hits.  Nealer struck out 12 batters.  Righty LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) took the loss. 

For the Gators, third baseman Nicole Rodi knocked in two runs with a single.  Second baseman Marina Scarantino contributed with two hits in three at bats and one run scored.  Center fielder Stephanie Fort produced one RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Rowan had a triple and one run scored by shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.).  Third baseman Jess Phillips (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) contributed with one RBI and left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) scored one run.

The Profs were ahead 2-0 after scoring one run in the first and third innings.  In the first, Arcella led off with a walk and stole second.  She later came home on an error with designated player Krysti Maronski (jr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/GCIT) at the plate.  Snead started the third inning with a triple to right field.  She crossed the plate on Phillips’ ground out.  Allegheny scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Against Wilkes, right-hander Beth Ann Hyland (fr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) threw four innings for the victory and righty Jamie Lambe (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) went the last three for the save.  Hyland scattered four hits and Lambe allowed two.  They each had four strikeouts. Laykin Hughes had the loss on the mound. 

Rowan designated player Ashley DeYoung (fr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) contributed with one hit (three at bats), two RBIs and two runs scored.  Phillips and Snead both were two for three with one RBI.  First baseman Stephanie Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) recorded a solo home run and scored three runs.  Catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) registered two hits (four at bats) and one run scored.

Second baseman Michelle Coyle produced three hits (four at bats), one double and two RBIs for Wilkes.  Shortstop Jessalyn Paveletz had a home run in the fourth inning. 

The Profs got on the scoreboard first with Labas’ solo shot in the bottom of the first inning.  The Colonels tied the score in the third.  In the bottom half, Rowan went ahead 4-1 with three runs.  DeYoung knocked in two runs with a double and she crossed the plate on Phillips’ double to right center.  Wilkes pulled within one (4-3) after scoring one run in the fourth and fifth innings.  The Profs tacked on three runs in the fifth.  Labas came home on a fielder’s choice with pinch hitter Aubrey Newcomb (jr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) at bat.  Maronski had a sac fly that scored DeYoung.  Snead singled down the left field line, scoring Phillips.
