Rutgers-Newark Women's Basketball Defeats Rowan, 72-39

GLASSBORO, NJ  – The Rutgers-Newark women’s basketball team defeated Rowan University, 72-39 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday night. 

The Scarlet Raiders have a 16-8 record with a 10-6 conference mark.  The Profs are 5-19 overall and 1-14 in the NJAC.  Forward Jade Howard (so. Sicklerville, NJ/St. Joseph’s (Hammonton)) led the way with 16 points, eight rebounds and five steals.  Guard ShaQuanna Marshall (jr. Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) registered 13 points, seven boards and five steals.  Guard Maria Simmons (fr. Irvington, NJ/Irvington) chipped in with 12 points.  Forwards Jewell Palmer (jr. Port Reading, NJ/Woodbridge) and Jasmine Daniels (jr. Lodi, NJ/Lodi) added eight and six points respectively.  Daniels grabbed seven rebounds and Palmer had six.  

For Rowan, guard Bria Hill (so. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) totaled 12 points, five rebounds and six steals.  Guard Alexis Govan (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Camden City Tech. Schools) registered eight points and 10 boards, which was a career mark.  Forward Erin Farrell (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) collected seven points and five rebounds.  Forward Megan Russ (jr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Twp.) pulled down a career-high nine boards.  

In the first half, the Profs were ahead 8-2 (14:02) after a layup by Farrell.  Rutgers-Newark followed with a 21-3 run to lead by 12 points (23-11) at 5:10.  Simmons scored eight points and Marshall followed with five.  Howard contributed with four points while guard/forward Devinn Bright (fr. Keyport, NJ/Keyport) and Palmer each had two.  With 2:24 remaining, Daniels’ basket made the score 32-14.  She made a layup at the one second mark for a 19 point advantage (37-18) at the intermission.  Marshall and Simmons ended the period with eight points apiece while Farrell registered six.     

Howard had two straight baskets for a 29 point lead (51-22) at the 13 minute mark in the second stanza.  Hill hit a jump shot at 9:30 and the Profs trailed 55-30.  Rutgers-Newark had a 13-1 surge to go up by 37 (68-31) with 6:27 left.  Marshall scored five of the 13 points.  Govan’s jumper made the score 68-39 at 2:54.  The Scarlet Raiders ended the game with baskets by Roberts (2:36) and guard Laura Shakiri (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) (1:04) for the final score.  Howard tallied 10 points in the final half.  

Next week, Rowan ends the season at Richard Stockton College on Wednesday, February 13 at 6 p.m.
