GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team beat Kean University, 64-55 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
Guard Kendall White (sr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) led Rowan with 17 points and nine rebounds. He recorded his 1,000th point on a free throw with 23 seconds left in the game. White is the 25th player in school history to reach the mark. The Profs improve to 16-5 overall and 9-5 in the conference. The Cougars have a 6-15 record and a 5-9 NJAC mark.
Guard Fred Battee (sr. Westville, NJ/Deptford) compiled 14 points. Guard Phil Jackson (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and center Dee Benson (sr. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) collected seven points apiece. Benson also grabbed five boards. Guard Jason Rosenberg (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) added five points, five assists and two steals.
For Kean, guard Anthony Gibson (sr. Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Reg.) registered 16 points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals. Guard Michael Burton (jr. Irvington, NJ/South Plainfield) followed with 14 points. Center Xavier Fuller (jr. Carteret, NJ/Carteret) posted 10 points and five boards. Forward Kyle Latorre (jr. Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights) contributed with six points and nine rebounds.
Rowan was ahead, 8-7 following a jumper by Fuller at 11:55 in the first period. Battee (11:34) and guard Matt Whitworth (jr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) (9:33) each hit a three-pointer to give the Profs a seven point lead (14-7). Battee’s three-point play at 4:39 extended the advantage to nine (20-11). The Cougars went on a 7-0 run to pull within two (20-18) with 37 seconds remaining. Burton recorded five points and Fuller had two. Benson had a layup and a foul shot with seven seconds on the clock to make the score, 23-18 at the intermission. White, Battee and Fuller all compiled six points in the first half.
Guard Mike Shaughnessy (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) made a three at 19:28 in the second stanza and Kean trailed by two (23-21). Rowan had an 8-0 surge to go up by 10 (31-21) at 16:32. Guard Rich McNamara (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) and Battee both had a three-pointer and White added a layup. Fuller’s tip-in at 13:51 cut the deficit to eight (36-28). The Profs went on a 16-4 run for a 20 point advantage (52-32) at 8:23. Jackson posted seven of the 16 points.
Kean answered with a 9-2 spurt that ended at 5:17 (54-41). Forward Frank Nock (fr. Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton), Burton and Gibson all sunk a three-pointer. White’s layup at 4:05 made the score, 58-43. Gibson nailed a three (3:12) and Burton (2:10) had a jumper to come within 10 (58-48). White (1:14) and McNamara (:51) both had a free throw and the lead was 12 (60-48). With 27 seconds left, Gibson hit a three-pointer and the Cougars were down by nine (62-53). White registered two foul shots with 23 seconds on the clock. The second one was his 1000th career point. Latorre ended the scoring with a layup (:10).
Rowan travels to Ramapo College for a NJAC game on Saturday, February 2 at 3 p.m.
