WAYNE, NJ – The William Paterson University women’s basketball team had an 81-55 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) win against Rowan University on Saturday.
The Pioneers are 14-6 overall and 8-4 in the conference. The Profs have a 5-15 record with a 1-11 NJAC mark. Guard Floriana Borova (jr. Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) led William Paterson with 24 points, six assists and five rebounds.
Guard Kristine Jackiewicz (jr. Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) contributed with 13 points and eight boards. Forward Ashley Marfo (so. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She also collected seven steals. Forward Dana Jeter (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) chipped in with eight points and six boards.
For Rowan, guard Bria Hill (so. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Forward Megan Russ (jr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Twp.) and guard Heidi Avrov (fr. Towaco, NJ/Montville Twp.) each scored a career-high 10 points. Forward Brittany Barilla (fr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) added seven points and guard Tia Scott (fr. Paulsboro, NJ/Paulsboro) had a career mark with eight boards.
William Paterson started the game with 20 straight points in 6:47. Borova and Jeter each produced six points in the run. Guard Jessi Corredor’s (fr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) three-pointer at 11:41 made the score 23-6. Rowan had a 10 point deficit (23-13) after a 7-0 spurt. Russ scored four points and Hill had three. Jackiewicz increased the lead to 19 (34-15) with a three at 5:45. With 2:38 left, Hill nailed a three-pointer and the Profs trailed 36-23. At the end of the half, the Pioneers were up 40-25. Hill was the scoring leader with 10 points.
In the second stanza, Hill hit a jump shot at 14:59 and Rowan was down by 20 points (53-33). Borova made a jumper (14:50) and Jackiewicz had two foul shots (13:42). William Paterson led 57-33. With 11:31 remaining, the score was 63-39. The Pioneers had a 9-1 spurt for a 32 point advantage (72-40) at 9:05. It was their biggest lead of the game. Borova scored all nine points in the run. She totaled 18 points in the second half.
Next week, Rowan hosts conference opponent Kean University on Wednesday, January 30 at 6 p.m.
