Rutgers-Camden Women's Basketball Defeats Rowan, 70-41

CAMDEN, NJ  – The Rutgers-Camden women’s basketball team defeated Rowan University,  70-41 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday evening.

The Scarlet Raptors are 8-10 overall and 3-8 in the conference.  The Profs have a 5-14 record with a 1-10 NJAC mark.  Forward Brittany Turner (sr. Belleville, NJ/Queen of Peace) and guard Lillian Chukwueze (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) each scored 20 points.  Chukwueze also grabbed 11 rebounds while Turner had six. 

Guard Alex Gravinese (so. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) contributed with 12 points and guard Irene Grimanis (so. Brooklawn, NJ/Gloucester) collected six boards.  Guard Alex Koutras (sr. Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) dished five assists.

For Rowan, guard Eyandra Molina (sr. Pleasantville, NJ/Washington Irving (NY)) scored 12 points.  Guard Alexis Govan (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Camden City Technical Schools) totaled nine points and seven rebounds.  Forward Megan Russ (jr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Twp.) compiled seven points and seven boards.   

Chukwueze started the game with a three-pointer (19:50) and a jumper (16:51) for a 5-0 advantage.  Molina had a layup at 13:41 and the Profs trailed by two (8-6).  Rutgers-Camden led by 14 points (23-9) after a 15-3 run that ended at 8:55.  Chukwueze tallied nine of the 15 points in the surge.  Rutgers-Camden was ahead by 15 (30-15) with 4:58 left.  The Scarlet Raptors scored 15 straight points for a 30 point lead (45-15) at the 22 second mark.  Gravinese nailed three threes in the run.  The Profs ended the half with two foul shots by Molina (:17) and Govan (:01).  Rutgers-Camden was up 45-19 at the break.  Chukwueze was the scoring leader with 19 points while Gravinese registered 12.

In the second period, guard Loretta Kelly’s (so. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) jumper at 13:23 put the Scarlet Raptors ahead by 34 points (59-25).  With 13:01 remaining, Rutgers-Camden had a 59-27 advantage.  Turner made three consecutive baskets and center Tina Croxton (jr. Deptford, NJ/Deptford) had one, which made the score 67-27 at 9:37.  It was the Scarlet Raptors’ biggest lead of the game, 40 points.  Turner scored 13 points in the second half.   

Rowan travels to conference opponent William Paterson University on Saturday, January 26 for a 1 p.m. contest.
