GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team won 55-52 over New Jersey City University in conference game on Saturday.
The Profs are 5-13 overall and 1-9 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The Gothic Knights have a 3-14 record with a 1-9 NJAC mark. In the first meeting this season, New Jersey City edged visiting Rowan, 61-60 (Dec. 1).
With 1:50 left, guard Bria Hill (so. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) put the Profs up by four (51-47) with a layup. The Gothic Knights pulled within one (51-50) after a three-pointer by center Deseree Johnson (fr. Red Bank, NJ/Monmouth Reg.). Forward Alnisa Hernaiz (jr. Irvington, NJ/Irvington) went to the line at 1:22. She tied the score with her first foul shot and put New Jersey City ahead (52-51) with her second. With 37 seconds on the clock, forward Megan Russ (jr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Twp.) sank two free throws, which gave Rowan back the lead (53-52). Forward Brittany Barilla (fr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) sealed the win with two foul shots at the 10 second mark.
Barilla finished the game with career-highs of 10 points and 14 rebounds. Guard Eyandra Molina (sr. Pleasantville, NJ/Washington Irving (NY)) scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed eight boards. Hill contributed with nine points and nine rebounds. Guard Alexis Govan (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Camden City Tech. Schools) registered six rebounds.
For New Jersey City, Hernaiz totaled 19 points and 17 rebounds. Guard Ashley Vazquez (so. Jersey City, Marist) produced 12 points and guard Jade Medley (so. Queens, NY/Hudson Catholic) followed with 10. Guard/forward Kiana Briggs (fr. Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech) dished six assists.
Vazquez hit a three at 19:18 in the second stanza to lead 24-21. Molina (18:39) and Barilla (18:02) had back-to-back baskets to go ahead by one (25-24). Russ’ two free throws (16:32) tied the score at 28. The Gothic Knights followed with two foul shots (15:44) by Vazquez and a layup (14:32) from Johnson for a four point advantage (32-28). The Profs had a 7-0 run to go up by three (35-32) at 11:52. Molina scored four of the seven points. The score was tied six more times, with the last one at 45 with 3:33 left. Molina tied the score with a jumper then completed the three-point play with a foul shot and a one point lead (46-45). Barilla followed with a free throw (3:15) and Molina had a layup (2:42). The Profs were ahead 49-45. Vazquez made fouls shots at 2:13 before Hill’s basket at 1:50.
In the first half, the score was tied three times in 8:53. Barilla’s foul shot at 11:07 knotted the score at 12. The Profs then scored seven straight points to lead 19-12 at 6:05. Hill contributed with three points while Molina and Barilla each had two. Molina’s two free throws made the score 21-14 with 4:21 left. The Gothic Knights ended the period with seven unanswered points. Medley cut the deficit to two with a three pointer (1:26) and tied the score (:38) with a jumper.
Next week, Rowan plays at conference opponent Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday 23 at 6 p.m.
