NEWARK, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark women’s basketball team had a 65-45 conference win over Rowan University on Saturday night.
The Scarlet Raiders have a 10-5 record with a 5-3 New Jersey Athletic Conference mark. The Profs are 4-12 overall and 0-8 in the conference. Center Jewell Palmer (jr. Port Reading, NJ/Woodbridge) led the way with 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Guards Maria Simmons (fr. Irvington, NJ/Irvington) and Laura Shakiri (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and center Sharee Gordon (so. Newark, NJ/University) each contributed with nine points. Gordon also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
For Rowan, guard Eyandra Molina (sr. Pleasantville, NJ/Washington Irving (NY)) scored 19 points and pulled down seven boards. Guard Bria Hill (so. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) totaled nine points and six rebounds.
The Profs started the game with a 7-2 run in 5:08. Hill had a three-point play while guard Jade Bonder (so. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Molina had one basket apiece. Rutgers-Newark went ahead 13-7 with an 11-0 run that ended at 8:45. Shakiri hit a three while forward Jade Howard (so. Sicklerville, NJ/St. Joseph’s (Hammonton)), guard Dominique Roberts (fr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken), Palmer and Gordon all had two points. Hill (5:56) and center Stephanie Krauss (sr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) (4:59) made layups and Rowan trailed by two (17-15). The Scarlet Raiders ended the period with eight straight points for a 10 point advantage (25-15). Palmer scored six points in the run. She led all scorers with 10 points.
In the second stanza, Rutgers-Newark was up by 15 points (31-16) at 17:21 after a 6-1 spurt. Guard ShaQuanna Marshall (jr. Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) had a three-pointer, Gordon made a jump shot and Palmer sank a foul shot. Rowan pulled within 10 points (34-24) at 13:32 with a three-point play by Molina. The Scarlet Raiders followed with a 10-1 surge to lead by 19 (44-25) at 11:18. Forward Jasmine Daniels’ (jr. Lodi, NJ/Lodi) jumper put Rutgers-Newark up by 26 points (55-29) at 8:12. The Profs were down by 16 points (60-44) with 1:50 left after guard Tia Scott (fr. Paulsboro, NJ/Paulsboro) had a layup. Molina was the scoring leader in the second half with 15 points.
Next week, Rowan plays at Montclair State University on Wednesday, January 16 at 6 p.m.
