NEWARK, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark men’s basketball team defeated Rowan University, 85-60 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday night.
The Scarlet Raiders improve to 12-3 overall and 7-2 in the conference. The Profs have a 10-5 record with a 4-5 NJAC mark.
Forward David Azoroh (fr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) led Rutgers-Newark with 20 points off the bench. Forward Christian Garcia (so. Freehold, NJ/Freehold) and guard John Snow (so. Newark, NJ/Montclair Kimberley) followed with13 and 12 points respectively. Guard Doze Ikwuegbu (so. Union, NJ/Union) collected 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. Center Hussein Abdelmaksoud (sr. West New York, NJ/Memorial) totaled eight points and 12 rebounds, while forward Mark Moorman (sr. Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken) grabbed eight boards.
For Rowan, guard Jason Rosenberg (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) compiled 18 points. Forward Brendan Cox (sr. Lindenwold, NJ/Highland Reg.) contributed with eight points and seven rebounds. Guard Rich McNamara (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) tallied six points and eight boards. Guards Daniel Waynick (so. Twin Rivers, NJ/Hightstown) and Kendall White (sr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) each chipped in with six points.
The Profs trailed by two (15-13) following a layup by forward Jason Sofman (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) at 12:07 in the first period. The Scarlet Raiders scored the next eight points for a 10 point advantage (23-13) at 10:49. Guard Josh Treadwell (fr. Edison, NJ/Marist) and Azoroh both had three points and Abdelmaksoud added two. Guard Rahim Bunch’s (fr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) basket at 8:57 extended the lead to 16 (33-17). After a three-pointer by Cox (8:22), Rutgers-Newark had a 7-0 surge to make the score, 40-20 with 5:56 on the clock. Ikwuegbu hit a three-pointer, while Abdelmaksoud and Azoroh added one basket apiece.
At 3:57, Azoroh nailed two free throws and Rowan was down by 22 (46-24). The Profs recorded five consecutive points to come within 17 (46-29) at 1:46. Center Dan Brogan (fr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) and Rosenberg each had a layup and McNamara made a foul shot. Abdelmaksoud’s basket with 48 seconds left made the score, 50-31 at the intermission. Azoroh registered 13 points in the first period and Rosenberg had 12.
Iwuegbu’s jumper at 19:04 in the second stanza pushed the lead to 19 (52-33). White followed with a three-pointer (18:54) and a free throw (18:01) and the Profs came within 15 (52-37). At 17:10, the score was 55-40 after a three by McNamara. The Scarlet Raiders had a 9-2 run to pull away, 64-42 with 13:47 on the clock. Snow collected four points, Garcia had three and Azoroh added two. Garcia’s jump shot at 11:19 gave Rutgers-Newark a 25 point advantage (70-45). The Scarlet Raiders’ largest lead of the game was 26 points (85-59) after a basket by Ikwuegbu with 3:28 left to play.
