MAHWAH, NJ – The Rowan University men’s soccer team defeated Randolph-Macon College, 4-1 on the first day of the President’s Cup on Friday. It was the season opener for both teams.
Prior in the President’s Cup, Berry College (GA) shut out host Ramapo College, 1-0. Rowan plays Berry College on Saturday at 1 p.m. while Ramapo faces Randolph-Macon at 3 p.m.
The Profs scored three goals in the first half. Forward Christian Fountain (so. Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) started the scoring at 8:36. He knocked the ball in the net after a shot by midfielder Ryan Gordon (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) was blocked. At the 23 minute mark, back Shane Dooley (sr. Burlington Twp., NJ/Burlington Twp.) headed in a corner kick by Julian Berrios (sr. Lakewood, NJ/Calvary Academy). Midfielder Travis Cortes (fr. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) scored his first collegiate goal at 30:51 with an assist from Berrios.
Fountain picked up his second goal at 68:02 and midfielder Shane Kohler (so. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.) had the assist. With 3:09 remaining, midfielder David Cartmill (fr. Newtownabbey, Ireland/Belfast Royal Academy) spoiled the shutout. Midfielder Johnny Bustillo (jr. Chesterfield, VA/Meadowbrook) registered the assist.
Rowan totaled 14 shots while Randolph-Macon took five. Goalkeepers Ryan Gill (jr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) and Kevin Vasta (jr. Randolph, NJ/Randolph) shared the Profs’ duties. Gill made one save in 73:09. Vasta played the remainder of the game. In the Yellow Jackets’ net, goalie Chris Lowe (sr. Rome, GA/Darlington School) stopped four shots.
