CLAREMONT, CA – Rowan University’s Jena Peacock took third place in the 3000 meter steeplechase and Melissa Lake finished eighth in the javelin at the 2012 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The national championships were held at Burns Stadium on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
Peacock (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) had a time of 10:37.20 for All-America honors. She improved on her school record (10:39.70) from the 2012 Larry Ellis Invitational. On Thursday in the prelims, Peacock came in third in 10:48.16. This is the first year that the event has had prelims in Division III. Amherst College’s Keri Lambert won the 3000 meter steeplechase with a stadium record 10:27.32.
Peacock qualified for the NCAAs with the third best time, 10:39.70, among the 22 competitors. Last year, Peacock finished 16th at the national championships with a time of 10:56.71. In 2010, she took 11th place in 10:52.58.
Lake (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) threw the javelin 138’ 5” (42.20 meters) for All-America honors. The distance came on her first of six throws. The winner was Britlyn Garrett from California Lutheran University with 154’ 8” (47.14 meters).
Jamie Thompson (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick) came in ninth with a time of 14.78 in the 100 meter hurdles final. In the Friday prelims, she ran 14.26 to advance to the national championship. She qualified for the NCAAs with a time of 14.55 from the prelims at the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships.
Rowan finished tied for 40th (seven points) in the team scoring among 80 schools. The Profs had five individuals that qualified for the national championships. Wartburg College won the NCAA Championship with 129 points. Wis.-Oshkosh took second place (52 points) followed by Mount Union College, third (34 points) and Methodist College, fourth (29 points). Rounding out the top five was Williams College (23 points).
