UNION, NJ – The Rowan University softball team defeated the second seed Moravian College, 3-1 in the fourth round of the NCAA Union Regional. The double elimination tournament is hosted by Kean University.
The third seed Rowan (39-8) has to play a second game on Sunday against the top seed Montclair State (41-7) at 2 p.m. The Red Hawks have not lost a game in the regional. The if necessary game is slated for Monday at 10 a.m. The regional winner advances to the national championship that is scheduled for Friday-Tuesday, May 18-22 at the Moyer Complex in Salem, VA.
Right-hander Jamie Minix (sr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) threw five innings for the win. Minix (13-6) scattered three hits and had four strikeouts. Righty LeAnne Miller (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) pitched the final two innings for her first save. She allowed one earned run on one hit. Right-hander Jenna Carmon (sr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) took the loss. Carmon (22-7) gave up three runs, one earned on five hits.
Profs’ left fielder Jennifer Arcella (so. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) went two for three with two runs scored. First baseman Stephanie Labas (jr. Millville, NJ/Millville) contributed with a double (three at bats) and one RBI. Designated player Katie Trotter (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) chipped in with one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Left fielder Lauren Davis (sr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) added one hit in two trips to the plate.
For the Greyhounds, right fielder Miranda Sergas (so. Lansdale, PA/North Penn) recorded a double in two at bats. Catcher Cassie Ernst (so. Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) and designated player Jenn Dalickas (fr. Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) each registered a hit (two at bats). Pinch hitter Alyssa Fegely (jr. Mertztown, PA/Brandywine) went one for one with a RBI.
The Profs took the lead with one run in the first inning. Arcella had a single and she went to second on an error with Minch at bat and two outs. Trotter knocked in Arcella with a single to left center field.
Rowan was ahead 3-0 after two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Arcella led off with a single to center field and she advanced to second on a wild pitch. Labas ripped a double to left center field, scoring Arcella. Labas was replaced by pinch runner Ally Zitzman (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown N.). Third baseman Julie Leskanic (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) reached on an error and Zitzman crossed the plate.
Moravian scored its lone run in the top of the seventh. First baseman Amanda Dizinno (jr. Budd Lakem NJ/Mount Olive) was hit by pitch. Bryanna Gifford (fr. Scranton, PA/West Scranton) came in the game to run for Dizinno. Dalickas moved Gifford to second with a sacrifice bunt. Gifford went to third on a ground out and scored on Fegely’s single to left center.
The Profs received an automatic bid to the national tournament as the champion of the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Rowan defeated Montclair State, 3-1 in the conference final (May 6). This is the Profs’ 20th appearance in the NCAAs. Rowan has advanced to the national finals three times and finished fourth in 1994 and 1993.
