Montclair State Wins 1-0 Over Rowan In Final Of NCAA Union Regional

UNION, NJ – The Montclair State University softball team won 1-0 over Rowan University in the final game of the NCAA Union Regional.  The double elimination tournament was held at Kean University.   

The top seeded Red Hawks (42-7) advance to the national championship that will be held Friday-Tuesday, May 18-22 at the Moyer Complex in Salem, VA.  The third seed Rowan ends the season with a 39-9 record.  Prior to the final game, Rowan defeated the second seed Moravian College, 3-1.

Right-hander Alex Hill (so. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) only allowed three hits in the complete game shutout.  She (30-4) recorded 10 strikeouts.  Righty LeAnne Miller (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) suffered the loss.  Miller (21-3) gave up one earned run on three hits.  She was named to the All-Tournament Team along with catcher Nicolina Veneziano (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield).

Hill also had two hits in three at bats.  Pinch hitter Melany Zeller (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) produced one hit and the game-winning RBI.  For the Profs, designated player Katie Trotter (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown), second baseman Nicole Escudero (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and right fielder Lauren Davis (sr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) each contributed with one hit.

Montclair State scored in the top of the seventh inning.  Hill led off with a single through the left side.  She was replaced by the flex player Priscilla Camacho (sr. Jersey City, NJ/County Prep).  Camacho advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by first baseman Alisha Cumberton (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.).  With two outs, Zeller had a base hit to the right side and Camacho came home.

The Profs received an automatic bid to the national tournament as the champion of the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  Rowan defeated Montclair State, 3-1 in the conference final (May 6).  This was the Profs’ 20th appearance in the NCAAs.
