GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader with Ramapo College on Saturday. The Roadrunners won the first game, 6-3 and the Profs took the second, 7-2.
Rowan has a 23-4 overall record while Ramapo is 16-4 on the season. Both teams are 3-3 in the conference. The Profs are ranked 11th in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 Poll.
Right-hander Lauren Shaw (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) was the winning pitcher in the opener. Shaw (9-2) scattered seven hits and gave up three earned runs. She had five strikeouts. Righty Jamie Minix (sr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) took the loss. She (9-3) allowed six runs, four earned and struck out seven hitters.
The Roadrunners’ shortstop Kelsey Higgins (jr. Wall, NJ/Wall) went three for four with a double, one RBI and one run scored. First baseman Janet Brown (jr. Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) totaled two hits (four at bats) and two RBIs. Left fielder Tiffany Fischer (sr. Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) and pinch hitters Taylor Boffalo (fr. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) and Harley Masiello (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) each contributed with one hit and one RBI. Boffalo also scored one run.
For the Profs, catcher Nicolina Veneziano (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) produced three hits (three at bats), a homer and two runs scored. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (so. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) was two for three with a triple and one RBI. Designated player Katie Trotter (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) recorded a double, one RBI and one run scored.
Rowan took the lead, 3-2 with a solo home run by Veneziano in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ramapo went ahead with four runs in the seventh. Boffalo drove in the first run with a single to center field. Brown’s base hit scored center fielder Jaclyn Lima (fr. Linden, NJ/Linden) and right fielder Danielle Rothenberger (sr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston). Boffalo crossed the plate on a single by Higgins.
The Profs got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the third. Trotter knocked in Veneziano with a double to right center. Arcella singled to center field and Trotter came home. The Roadrunners tied the score in the top of the fifth. Higgins led off with a single and Smith followed with a double to right field. Masiello knocked in Higgins with a single. Fischer’s base hit to right field scored Smith.
Right-hander LeAnne Miller (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) pitched a complete game for the win in the second contest. Miller (11-1) allowed two runs, one earned and fanned eight batters. Masiello started on the mound and went 2.2 innings in the loss. She (2-2) gave up four earned runs on three hits.
Trotter went two for four with a double and two runs scored. Arcella contributed with a home run and two RBIs. First baseman Stephanie Labas (jr. Millville, NJ/Millville) and second baseman Nicole Escudero (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) each had one hit and one RBI. Labas also scored one run.
Lima compiled three hits in four at bats, one RBI and one run scored. Smith tallied two hits (four at bats) and one RBI. Rothenberger posted two hits in four trips to the plate. Higgins added a double (three at bats) and one run scored.
Rowan went up 6-0 after one run in the second inning, three in the third and two in the fourth. Arcella recorded a solo shot in the second, which was her first home run of the year. In the third, center fielder Shannon Costello (fr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) walked with the bases loaded, scoring Labas. Escudero followed with a walk and shortstop Ashley Minch (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) came home. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Labas’ sacrifice fly scored Veneziano in the fourth. Arcella reached base on a fielder’s choice that plated Trotter.
Ramapo’s first run came in the fifth inning. Higgins had a leadoff double to left center. She came home on a fielder’s choice with Lima at bat. The Profs led 7-1 after one run in the sixth. Trotter had a double to center field then she tagged up after a foul out to right center field. She made it all the way home for the Profs’ final run. In the top of the seventh, Smith had a RBI single to right field that scored Lima.
Rowan is home again on Tuesday, April 10 against conference opponent Rutgers-Camden at 3 p.m.
