GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won both games of a doubleheader, 10-0 in five innings against Valley Forge Christian College on Thursday. The games ended early because of the eight run rule.
The Profs, ranked 11th in the nation, are 22-3 overall while the Patriots are 0-20 on the season. This is the first year of competition for the Valley Forge Christian softball team. In the night cap, first baseman Stephanie Labas (jr. Millville, NJ/Millville) tied the University record for home runs in a season with nine.
In the first game, right-hander Katie Trotter (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) threw a no-hitter. She (1-0) struck out seven batters. Kaitlyn Gossert took the loss on the mound. She (0-7) gave up 10 earned runs.
Rowan shortstop Ashley Minch (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) went three for three with a triple, two RBIs and one run scored. Right fielder Katie Carberry (fr. Long Valley, NJ/W. Morris Central) contributed with two hits in two at bats, two RBIs and one run scored. First baseman Ashlie Gaynor (sr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) chipped in with two hits (three at bats), a double, three RBIs and one run scored.
Third baseman Lindsey Sampolski (jr. Runnemede, NJ/Triton Reg.) added one hit (two at bats) and scored three runs. Designated player Kristi Twardziak (so. Somerdale, NJ/Triton Reg.) had two hits (four at bats) and one run scored. Center fielder Shannon Costello (fr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) collected one hit (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Second baseman Jennifer Arcella (so. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and left fielder Megan Becker (sr. Collingsdale, PA/Academy Park) had one RBI apiece. Catcher Nicolina Veneziano (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) scored two runs.
The Profs scored seven runs in the first inning. Minch drove in Twardziak with a triple to right center field. Costello had a RBI that scored Minch. Carberry plated Sampolski and Veneziano with a single to right field. Gaynor’s double to left center field knocked in Costello and Carberry. Minch drove in Gaynor with a base hit through the left side.
Rowan tacked on two runs in the second inning and one in the third. Gaynor’s single in the second scored Sampolski. Arcella walked with the bases loaded and Veneziano went home. In the third, Becker was hit by a pitch and Sampolski crossed the plate.
Righty Samantha Liedtka (jr. Hamilton Square, NJ/Steinert) was the winning pitcher in the second contest. She (2-0) only allowed one hit and totaled seven strikeouts. Gossert had the loss and she (0-8) gave up eight earned runs.
Labas went two for three with four RBIs, a double and a home run. It was her ninth homer on the season, which tied the school record. The mark is shared by Jamie Musey (1997) and Veneziano (2010). Arcella went one for two with two RBIs and one run scored. Becker registered two hits in two trips to the plate, two RBIs and one run scored. Outfielder Lauren Davis (sr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) added one hit (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford), catcher Amanda Toomer (fr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert), Carberry and Sampolski all had one hit and one run scored. Sampolski’s hit was a double. Second baseman Nicole Escudero (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and Twardziak each scored a run.
Rowan totaled four runs in the first and third innings. Davis drove in Escudero with a single in the first inning. Labas followed with a two run homer to left field. Becker’s base hit scored Sampolski. In the third, Arcella recorded a two RBI single and Labas posted a two RBI double. The Profs’ last two runs came in the fourth. The bases were loaded and Becker walked, scoring Leskanic. Twardziak recorded a sacrifice fly that brought Toomer home.
Next, Rowan hosts Ramapo College on Saturday, April 7 in a conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
