GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader with The College of New Jersey on Wednesday.  The Lions won the first game, 10-7 in nine innings and the Profs had a 6-0 shutout in the second.

Rowan has a 30-7 record with a 10-6 NJAC mark.  The College of New Jersey is 22-12 overall and 11-5 in the conference.

In the opener, right-hander Lauren Fitzsimmons (sr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) threw a complete game.  Fitzsimmons (15-4) gave up seven runs, five earned.  Righty Jamie Minix (sr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) took the loss.  In 8.1 innings, Minix (11-6) allowed 10 runs, five earned.

The score was tied at six after seven innings.  Both teams scored one run in the eighth.  In the ninth, first baseman Katelyn Congilose (sr. Toms River, NJ.Monsignor Donovan) was placed on second base because of the internationally tiebreaker rule.  She was replaced by pinch runner Corinne Minicozzi (so. Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne).  Catcher Michelle Kent (sr. Sparta, NJ/Pope John) advanced Minicozzi to third with a sacrifice bunt.  Shortstop Lindsey Williams (so. Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) knocked in Minicozzi with a single to left center field.  Williams stole second and went to third on a base hit by left fielder Crystal Lee (sr. Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls).  Lee stole second.  Right fielder Michelle Casale (jr. Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) singled to right field, scoring Williams and Lee went to third.  Third baseman Kelly Hommen (jr. Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) had a sacrifice bunt and Lee crossed the plate.

Casale ended the game with three hits (five at bats), a double and two RBIs.  Lee went two for five with two runs scored.  Hommen contributed with one hit and two RBIs.  Second baseman Ashley Sogluizzo (jr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) chipped in with two hits (three at bats), one RBI and two runs scored.  Designated player Nicole Brodbeck (so. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) added one hit and two RBIs.  Congilose registered one hit and one RBI.  Williams collected one hit (four at bats), one RBI and two runs scored.

For the Profs, catcher Nicolina Veneziano (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) went two for five with a double and a home run, four RBIs and one run scored.  She broke the school’s career home run record with 22.  The old mark was 21 by Jamie Musey (1994-97).  Second baseman Nicole Escudero (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) produced three hits in four at bats, a double and two runs scored. 

Right fielder Lauren Davis (sr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) had two hits in three trips to the plate, one RBI and one run scored.  Designated player Katie Trotter (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) registered a double and one RBI while third baseman Julie Leskanic (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) tallied one hit and one RBI.  Center fielder Megan Becker (sr. Collingdale, PA/Academy Park) had a double and scored two runs.

The Profs were ahead 5-3 going into the sixth inning.  The Lions scored two runs to tie the score.  With one out, center fielder Liz Huttner (jr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) doubled to right center and came home on Sogluizzo’s single.  Sogluizzo went to second on the throw.  Brodbeck knocked in Sogluizzo with a base hit to right center field.  In the bottom of the sixth, Rowan took the lead, 6-5 on Trotter’s RBI double that scored Davis.  TCNJ tied the score at six in the seventh inning.  Casale ripped a double to left field and Williams came home.  In the eighth, Huttner scored on a ground out by Brodbeck.  Becker crossed the plate on Veneziano’s double to left center field in the bottom half.

In the nightcap, right-hander LeAnne Miller (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) recorded her fifth shutout on the season.  Miller (15-1) only allowed three hits and she struck out five batters.  Righty Alex Carisone (so. Branchburg, NJ/Rutgers Prep) had the loss on the mound.  Carisone (7-8) gave up six earned runs on 10 hits.

Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (so. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) totaled three hits in four at bats, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Profs.  Veneziano posted two hits (four at bats), two RBIs, a homer and two runs scored.  Trotter produced two hits (two at bats), a double and two RBIs.  Escudero contributed with one hit in two at bats and scored two runs. 

For TCNJ, Minicozzi, Hommen and Williams all had one hit.  Rowan was up 2-0 after scoring one run in the first and third innings.  Trotter had a RBI single in the first and a RBI double in the third. Arcella scored both runs.  The Profs led 4-0 after two runs in the fourth inning.  Arcella knocked in Escudero and Veneziano with a base hit.  Rowan tacked on two more runs in the sixth with a two run homer by Veneziano.   

Rowan ends the regular season at conference opponent New Jersey City University on Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m.
