NEWARK, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won two conference games, 11-6 and 8-0 at Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday.
The Profs are 28-5 overall and 8-4 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The Scarlet Raiders have a 12-19 record with a 1-11 conference mark.
Right-hander Jamie Minix (sr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) threw a complete game for the win in the opener. Minix (11-4) gave up six runs, two earned and struck out 10 batters. Righty Liane Drastal (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) took the loss. Drastal (5-12) allowed eight hits and 11 runs, two were earned.
Catcher Nicolina Veneziano (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) recorded one home run and three RBIs. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) contributed with two hits (four at bats), a triple, one RBI and three runs scored. Designated player Lindsey Sampolski (jr. Runnemede, NJ/Triton Reg.) went two for four with two doubles and two runs scored. Shortstop Ashley Minch (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) added two hits in four trips to the plate, a triple and scored one run. Right fielder Lauren Davis (sr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) had one hit (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored.
For Rutgers-Newark, shortstop Victoria Sovak (fr. Roebling, NJ/Notre Dame) went two for three with one RBI and two runs scored. Third baseman Monica Liotto (jr. Morris Plains, NJ/Parsippany Hills) collected two hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Second baseman Tiara Santi (so. Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) and left fielder Nicole Odell (jr. Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph’s) each registered one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Santi also scored one run. First baseman Monica Bagan (jr. Wallington, NJ/Wallington) and right fielder Tina Zaggia (so. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) both had one hit and one run scored.
The Scarlet Raptors took the lead 6-2 with five runs in the third inning. Zaggia reached base with a single and later stole home. Liotto knocked in Sovak with a base hit to through the right side. With two outs, Santi and Odell had back-to-back RBI singles. Santi crossed the plate on an error. The Profs scored five runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead 7-6. Sampolski got on base with a double to right field and later came home on an error. Veneziano blasted a three run homer to right center.
Rowan added four more runs, three in the fifth and one in sixth. Leskanic posted a RBI triple and scored on an error. Davis produced a RBI single. In the sixth, Minch tripled to center field and crossed the plate on a throwing error.
Right-hander LeAnne Miller (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) recorded her fourth shutout in the second game. Miller (14-1) scattered three hits and had four strikeouts. Lefty Brianna Alicchio (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) had the loss on the mound. She (7-7) allowed eight runs, six earned on 14 hits.
Sampolski collected three hits (four at bats), one double, one home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (so. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) went three for four with a double and two runs scored. Davis had two hits (three at bats), a triple and one RBI. First baseman Stephanie Labas (jr. Millville, NJ/Millville) registered three hits (four at bats), one RBI and two runs scored. Second baseman Nicole Escudero (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) chipped in with one hit (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored.
Liotto had a double for the Scarlet Raiders. Designated hitter AJ Affholter (so. Trenton, MI/Southgate Anderson) and center fielder Tori Santiago (so. Jersey City, NJ/St. Dominic Academy) each contributed with one hit.
The Profs got on the scoreboard with two runs in the first inning. Sampolski doubled to left center, scoring Arcella and Labas. In the sixth, Escudero singled in Sampolski and Davis followed with a RBI triple. Rowan tacked on four runs in the seventh. Veneziano led off with a solo shot to center field. It was her third home run on the season. Arcella had a double to right center field and came home on Labas’ single to left field. Sampolski posted a two run homer that scored Labas.
Next, Rowan hosts NJAC opponent Kean University on Saturday, April 21 at 1 p.m.
