Rowan Wins Two Games Against Rutgers-Camden, 4-2 and 4-3 (8 inn.)

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won two conference games against Rutgers-Camden, 4-2 and 4-3 in eight innings on Tuesday. 

The Profs are 25-4 overall and 5-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC).  The Scarlet Raptors are 8-13 on the season with a 1-7 conference mark. 

Right-hander Jamie Minix (sr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) threw a complete game for the win in the opener.  Minix (10-3) only allowed three hits and two runs, one earned.  Righty Amanda Cassella (sr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) took the loss.  She (4-7) gave up four earned runs on seven hits.

Rowan right fielder Lauren Davis (sr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) went one for three with a triple, one RBI and one run scored.  Shortstop Ashley Minch (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) and pinch hitter Lindsey Sampolski (jr. Runnemede, NJ/Triton Reg.) each contributed with one hit and one RBI.  Third baseman Julie Leskanic (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) recorded a double and scored one run.  Pinch runner Kristi Twardziak (so. Somerdale, NJ/Triton Reg.) and second baseman Nicole Escudero (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) both crossed the plate one time. 

For Rutgers-Camden, Cassella had one hit in three at bats and scored one run.  Designated player Jackie Leafey (jr. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester City) was one for three with one run scored.  Second baseman Courtney Ray (jr. Gloucester City, NJ/Miami Palmetto (FL)) added one hit (two at bats).

The Profs got on the scoreboard first in the third inning.  Escudero led off with a walk and scored on Davis’ triple to right field.  Davis continued home on an error.  Rowan had a 3-0 lead with one run in the fourth.  With one out, Leskanic doubled to center field.  Sampolski plated Leskanic with a base hit to right field. 

The Scarlet Raptors scored their two runs in the top of the fifth inning.  Cassella produced a single to right field and later came home on an error.  Leafey crossed the plate on a wild pitch.  The Profs had one more run in the bottom half.  Designated player Katie Trotter (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had a lead off single and was replaced by Twardziak.  First baseman Stephanie Labas (jr. Millville, NJ/Millville) singled to right center and Twardziak advanced to third.  Minch knocked in Twardziak with a single to center field.

In the nightcap, Rowan tied the score at three with one run in the bottom of the seventh.  Davis singled to left field and went to second on an error.  With two outs, Labas walked and Minch followed with a walk, which loaded the bases.  Left fielder Jenny Arcella (so. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) had the RBI when she walked and Davis scored.

In the eighth, Leskanic was placed on second because of the international tie-breaker rule.  Center fielder Shannon Costello (fr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) reached base with a bunt single and Leskanic went to third.  With one out, Davis had a fielder’s choice and Leskanic was called safe at home for the winning run.

Right-hander LeAnne Miller (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) was the winning pitcher.  In eight innings, Miller (12-1) scattered six hits and the three runs were unearned.  Right-hander Ashleigh Johnson (jr. Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown) had the loss on the mound.  Johnson (3-6) allowed nine hits and three earned runs.

Arcella ended the game with two hits (three at bats), a double, one RBI and one run scored.  Labas went two for three while Minch had one hit in two at bats and one run scored.  Leskanic chipped in with a triple, two RBIs and one run scored.  Davis contributed with one hit (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. 

Ray went two for three with two RBIs.  Cassella collected two hits (four at bats) and one RBI.  Right fielder Vicki D’Anduono (sr. Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.) registered one hit (three at bats) and one run scored.  Designated player Tabby Dick (jr. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester City) and Leafey each scored one run. 

Rutgers-Camden went up 3-0 in the top of the sixth inning.  Cassella knocked in D’Anduono with a single to left field.  Ray recorded a two RBI single that scored Dick and Leafey.  Rowan followed with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.  With one out, Minch singled to center field and Arcella had a double to right.  Leskanic ripped a triple to right center that sent Minch and Arcella home.   

Next, Rowan travels to Montclair State University on Saturday, April 14 for a 1 p.m. NJAC doubleheader.
