Rowan Takes Two Games Against Washington College (MD)

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team took two games against Washington College (MD) on Wednesday.  The Profs won the first game, 8-7 and the second, 5-0 in five innings.  The second game was called on account of darkness.
 
The doubleheader was added to both team’s schedules because of the rained out games last weekend at the Virginia Wesleyan College Beach Blast in Virgina Beach, VA.  The Profs are undefeated with a 4-0 record while the Shorewomen are 1-3 on the season. 
 
In the first game, right-hander Jamie Minix (sr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) went five innings for the win.  She (2-0) struck out five batters and gave up four earned runs.  Righty Katie Trotter (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) earned the save.  She pitched two innings and gave up three runs, one earned and two hits.  Right-hander Brittany Walter (jr. Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright) threw 3.1 innings and took the loss.  She (0-1) allowed five hits and four earned runs. 
 
Profs’ third baseman Julie Leskanic (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) went two for four with three RBIs.  Shortstop Ashley Minch (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) contributed with one hit (four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored.  First baseman Stephanie Labas (jr. Millville, NJ/Millville) chipped in with two hits in three trips to the plate, one home run and two runs scored. 
 
For the Shorewomen, catcher Kylie Nottingham (so. Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) collected three hits in four at bats, one RBI and one run scored.  Shortstop Lindsey Glascock (jr. Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) and designated player Suzanne Patinella (fr. Fallston, MD/Maryvale Prep) each had one hit, two RBIs and one run scored.  First baseman Lauren Dockrill (so. San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) and second baseman Shaelan Nottingham (jr. Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decator) registered one hit and one run scored apiece.

Rowan had a 6-1 lead after scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) singled in second baseman Nicole Escudero (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee).  Right fielder Lauren Davis (sr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) and Veneziano crossed the plate on Minch’s hit.  Leskanic had a RBI single that brought home Labas.

Washington scored three runs in the fifth, which made the score 6-4.  Glascock record a two RBI single and Kylie Nottingham drove in one run with a hit.  The Shorewomen pulled within one   (6-5) after the top of the sixth.  Left fielder Kelsey Graham (fr. Dunkirk, MD/Northern) scored on an error.  In the bottom half, the Profs went up 8-5.  Leskanic singled up the middle and Minch and Trotter came home. 
Washington scored two runs in the seventh inning.  Patinella posted a RBI double and she later scored on an error. 
 
Rowan was ahead 2-0 after one run in the second and third innings.  Catcher Hannah Shontz (fr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) scored on a wild pitch for the first run.  Labas recorded a solo shot to left field in the third. 
 
In the nightcap, right-hander LeAnne Miller (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) was the winning pitcher.  Miller (2-0) totaled six strikeouts and only gave up four hits.  Righty Kristin Cooper (fr. Georgetown, DE/Sussex Central) had the loss on the mound.  Cooper (1-1) allowed seven hits and five runs, four were earned. 

At the plate, Davis went two for two with one run scored and a triple.  Labas produced a two-run homer in two at bats.  Minch collected two hits in two at bats and scored one run.  Veneziano contributed with one hit (two at bats), one RBI and one run scored.  Leskanic added one hit (two at bats) and one RBI.  Washington right fielder Christine Anderson (fr. Palmer Lake, CO/Lewis-Palmer) went two for three.  Shaelan Nottingham and Glascock each had one hit. 

The Profs had one run in the first and second innings for a 2-0 lead.  In the first, Leskanic’s single up the middle scored Veneziano.  Escudero recorded a sacrifice fly in the second.  Rowan was ahead 4-0 after Labas’ home run to center field, which brought Minch home.  Davis crossed the plate in the fourth on Veneziano’s single for the final run.
 
During spring break, Rowan plays at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida.  The softball team starts on Saturday, March 10 against Trine University (IN) at 9 a.m. and Daniel Webster College (NH) at 11 a.m.
