GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won two games over Haverford College, 9-1 in six innings and 9-1 in five innings on Thursday afternoon. The eight run rule was applied in both games.
The Profs remain perfect with a 17-0 record. Rowan is ranked 11th in this week’s National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Top 25 Poll. The Fords have an 8-3-1 mark.
In the first contest, right-hander Jamie Minix (sr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) threw a complete game. Minix (8-0) allowed one run on three hits. Righty Brittany Stevenson (so. Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point Jr.-Sr.) took the loss. She (4-2) gave up six runs in five innings.
First baseman Stepanie Labas (jr. Millville, NJ/Millville) led the Profs with two hits (four at bats), four RBIs and two home runs. She has seven homers on the season. Second baseman Nicole Escudero (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) went two for two with three RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) posted two hits (three at bats), one run scored and a triple. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (so. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) produced one hit (two at bats), one RBI and one run scored.
Shortstop Ashley Minch (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) registered one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Right fielder Lauren Davis (sr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) was one for three with one RBI. Pinch hitter Lindsey Sampolski (jr. Runnemede, NJ/Triton Reg.) and pinch runner Ally Zitzman (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown N.) both scored one run.
For Haverford, second baseman Stephanie Wolfson (fr. Blue Bell, PA/Germantown Academy) compiled one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Shortstop Jill Schnall (fr. Wayne, PA/Conestoga) tallied one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Designated hitter Laura Iwanyk (sr. Howell, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) went one for two at the plate.
Rowan scored one run in the second inning. Leskanic led off with a triple to right center field and she came home on Davis’ single. Haverford tied the game (1-1) in the top of the fourth. Schnall had a base hit. Wolfson drove her in with a single. The Profs pulled ahead, 4-1 on Escudero’s three run homer in the bottom half.
The Profs tacked on two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. Labas hit a solo shot and Arcella knocked in Minch with a bunt single in the fifth. Labas’ three run blast over the center field fence ended the game in the sixth.
In the nightcap, right-hander LeAnne Miller (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) went the distance for the victory. Miller (8-0) scattered five hits and surrendered one unearned run. Left-hander Claire Fitzgerald (so. Montclair, NJ/Montclair) was the losing pitcher. Fitzgerald (4-1) allowed eight runs, six earned in 3.1 innings.
Escudero went three for four with two runs scored and a double. Labas had three hits (three at bats), two runs scored and a double. Left fielder Megan Becker (sr. Collingdale, PA/Academy Park) contributed with one hit (one at bat), two RBIs and one run scored. Designated player Katie Trotter (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added one hit (two at bats) and one run scored. Pinch hitter Ashlie Gaynor (sr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) posted a double and one RBI. Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) drove in two runs, while catcher Kristi Twardziak (so. Somerdale, NJ/Triton Reg.) and Sampolski each had one RBI. Minch chipped in with one RBI and one run scored. Zitzman crossed the plate once.
Center fielder Elizabeth Newman (so. Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg.) collected two hits (three at bats) for the Fords. Third baseman Jen DiCandilo (so. Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) recorded a double (three at bats) and one RBI. Schnall scored once.
Haverford got on the scoreboard first with one run in the first inning. DiCandilo doubled in Schnall, who reached on an error. Rowan went up, 3-1 with three runs in the third. Escudero doubled down the left field line and scored on an error. Veneziano and Sampolski each drew a bases loaded walks, allowing Trotter and Labas to come home.
The Profs added five runs in the fourth. Minch was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, plating Escudero. Becker’s single up the middle knocked in Minch and Labas. Veneziano had a sacrifice bunt that brought in Leskanic. Twardziak ripped a single down the left field line and Becker scored. Gaynor’s double to left center field allowed Zitzman to cross the plate in the fifth.
Rowan travels to Ursinus College on Thursday, March 29 at 3 p.m.
