Rowan Sweeps Doubleheader Against Centenary, 9-1 and 9-1

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept a doubleheader against Centenary College, 9-1 and 9-1 on Tuesday afternoon.  Both games only went five innings because of the eight run rule.

The Profs, ranked 14th in the nation, are undefeated with a 15-0 record.  The Cyclones drop to 2-8 on the season.  Right-hander Jamie Minix (sr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) was the winning pitcher in the first game.  Minix (7-0) scattered five hits and had three strikeouts.  Righty Meagan Madsen (so. New Milford, NJ/New Milford) took the loss.  In four innings, Madsen (1-4) allowed four runs, two earned on five hits.

Rowan first baseman Stephanie Labas (jr. Millville, NJ/Millville) was two for three with one run scored.  Right fielder Lauren Davis (sr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) contributed with a double and two RBIs.  Shortstop Ashley Minch (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.), designated player Katie Trotter (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and pinch hitter Lindsey Sampolski (jr. Runnemede, NJTriton Reg.) each produced one hit, one RBI and one run scored. 

Second baseman Nicole Escudero (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) went two for two with one run scored.  Catcher Nicolina Veneziano (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) recorded a triple and scored one run.  Third baseman Julie Leskanic (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) had two hits (three at bats) and scored two runs.  Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (so. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) tallied one RBI and one run scored.    

For Centenary, second baseman Katie Ciecwisz (so. Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) went two for two with a double.  Designated player Erin Walsh (fr. Linden, NJ/Linden) registered a double and one run scored.  Center fielder Caitlin Veverka (sr. Bayonne, NJ/Holy Family Academy) and third baseman Kim Kopesky (so. Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) tallied one hit a piece.

The Cyclones tied the score at one in the top of the third inning.  Walsh led off with a double and went to third on a wild pitch.  She crossed the plate on a wild pitch.  The Profs took the lead with one run in the fourth.  Leskanic tripled to right field and came home on a wild pitch.  Rowan recorded seven runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Veneziano had a triple to right center then went home on an error.  Trotter scored on an illegal pitch.  Minch plated Labas with a single to center field.  Arcella reached base on an error and Minch scored.  Sampolski drove in Leskanic with a single to center field.  Davis recorded a game-ending double that brought home Arcella and Sampolski.   

Right-hander LeAnne Miller (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) got the win on the mound in the nightcap.  Miller (7-0) allowed five hits and struck out five batters.  Madsen (1-5) had the loss.

Veneziano went three for three with two RBIs, two doubles and two run scored.  Labas and Minch each totaled two RBIs, a double and one run scored.  Escudero registered two hits in three at bats, one RBI, a double and two runs scored.  Davis collected one hit, one RBI and two runs scored.  Arcella contributed with one hit and one RBI. 

Veverka went one for two with one run scored and a double.  First baseman Brianne McManus (jr. Laurence Harbor, NJ/Old Bridge) had a RBI.  Left fielder Caitlyn Dean (so. Haskell, NJ/Lakeland Reg.) and right fielder Samantha Belmonte (fr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) had one hit apiece while Walsh recorded a double.

Both teams scored one run in the first inning.  Veverka got on base with a double to right field.  McManus walked with the bases loaded, scoring Veverka.  Veneziano led off with a double to right field and she later came home on a fielder’s choice. 

Rowan went up 6-1 with five runs in the second.  Veneziano plated Escudero with a single to center field.  Labas’ double brought home Davis and Veneziano.  Minch followed with a double to left field and Labas scored.  The Profs added three more runs in the fifth inning.  Sampolski walked and went to second on a wild pitch.  She crossed the plate on Escudero’s double to left field.  Davis had a RBI single that brought Escudero home.  Veneziano ended the game with a RBI double that scored Davis.

Rowan is home again on Thursday, March 22 versus Haverford College at 3 p.m.
