Rowan Opens Season With Two Wins At Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Rowan University softball team opened the season with two wins at the Virginia Wesleyan College Beach Blast on Friday.  The Profs shutout Lynchburg College, 8-0 and defeated Franklin & Marshall College, 13-2.  Both games ended after five innings because of the eight run rule. 

The Beach Blast continues on Saturday and Rowan plays Shenandoah University at noon followed by a 4 p.m. game against Washington College (MD).  Lynchburg has a 4-6 record while F&M is 0-2 on the season. 

Against Lynchburg, right-hander Jamie Minix (sr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) was the winning pitcher.  She only allowed two hits and struck out six batters.  Amber Ingram (fr. Floyd, VA/Floyd County) took the loss on the mound.
 
Profs’ right fielder Lauren Davis (sr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) was two for three at the plate with two  RBIs and one run scored.  Designated player Lindsey Sampolski (jr. Runnemede, NJ/Triton Reg.) recorded a three run homer.  Third baseman Julie Leskanic (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) contributed with two hits (two at bats), one RBI, two runs scored and a double.  Second baseman Nicole Escudero (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had three hits in three trips to the plate and scored one run. 

Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) chipped in with one hit (one at bat).  First baseman Stephanie Labas (jr. Millville, NJ/Millville) added a double (three at bats) and one run scored.  Shortstop Ashley Minch (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) and pinch runner Ally Zitzman (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown N.) each scored one run.  

Rowan jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning.  Leskanic knocked in Minch with a double for the first run.  Sampolski recorded a home run that brought home, Labas and Leskanic.  The Profs tacked on two more runs in the third.  Davis had a two RBI single, scoring Leskanic and Zitzman.  Rowan’s two runs in the fifth came home on a passed ball and an error. 
 
Righty LeAnne Miller (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) collected the win in the nightcap.  She gave up three hits and struck out seven batters. Right-hander Kaitlin Zampino (so. Millburn, NJ/Millburn) was the losing pitcher. 
 
Labas produced two hits (four at bats), two runs scored and a grand slam home run.  Veneziano was two for four with three RBIs and one run scored.  Leskanic tallied one hit (two at bats) and scored two runs.  Davis posted three hits in three at bats, two runs scored and one RBI.  Escudero registered a double, three RBIs and two runs scored.  Minch contributed with two hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored.
 
Rowan got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning with three runs.  Escudero had a two RBI double and she scored on Veneziano’s single.  F&M had one run in the bottom half.  The Profs went up 12-1 with nine runs in the third.  Escudero walked with the bases loaded and Leskanic crossed the plate.  Davis knocked in a run and Veneziano followed with a two RBI single.  Minch was hit by a pitch and Davis went home then Labas recorded a grand slam home run.  The Diplomats’ second and final run came in the third.  Rowan had one more run in the fifth.  Minch singled, scoring Davis.
