KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team recorded shutouts over McDaniel College (MD), 4-0 and Marietta College (OH), 5-0 on Friday. It was the end of the Profs’ spring break trip to the Rebel Spring Games.
Rowan, ranked 14th in the nation, is undefeated with a 13-0 record. Right-hander Jamie Minix (sr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) pitched a complete game for the win against McDaniel. It was her third shutout on the year. She (6-0) only allowed four hits and struck out seven batters. Righty Caroline Brehm took the loss. She (3-4) gave up four runs, three earned on seven hits. Brehm totaled 12 strikeouts.
Catcher Nicolina Veneziano (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) went one for three with two RBIs. Designated player Katie Trotter (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and first baseman Stephanie Labas (jr. Millville, NJ/Millville) each contributed with a double and one RBI. Right fielder Lauren Davis (sr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) chipped in with two hits (three at bats), a triple and two runs scored. Second baseman Nicole Escudero (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) added a double and one run scored. Shortstop Ashley Minch (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) produced one hit and pinch runner Ally Zitzman (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown N.) scored one run.
For McDaniel (6-5), catcher Tracy Davis had two hits in three trips to the plate and one was a double. Second baseman Megan Moore and right fielder Lauren Fusco registered one hit (three at bats) apiece.
The Profs were ahead 2-0 after scoring one run in the third and fifth innings. Davis had a lead off triple to start the third. Veneziano followed with a single that drove in Davis. In the fifth, Escudero doubled to left center field and she later came home on an error with Veneziano at the plate. Rowan sealed the victory with two runs in the seventh inning. Davis had a single then stole second. Trotter plated Davis with a double to left field. Zitzman replaced Trotter. Labas knocked in Zitzman with a double.
Versus Marietta, right-hander LeAnne Miller (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) went seven innings for her second shutout. Miller (6-0) scattered six hits and collected eight strikeouts. Righty Alexis O’Hair had the loss on the mound. O’Hair (3-3) allowed five hits and five runs, three were earned.
Third baseman Julie Leskanic (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and Minch both went one for three with one RBI and one run scored. Labas added one hit in three at bats and one RBI. Trotter had one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (so. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) contributed with a single and Venziano scored one run.
The Pioneers (6-4) had two hits apiece from catcher Marissa McDaniel and center fielder Hanna Tarski. McDaniel tallied a double. Left fielder Michelle Kelley and third baseman Sarah Mayo each produced one hit.
Rowan got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning with two runs. Minch and Leskanic had back-to-back singles. Arcella’s sacrifice bunt moved Minch and Leskanic to third and second base. With two outs, Escudero reached base on an error, scoring Minch and Leskanic. The Profs tacked on three more runs in the sixth. Veneziano led off with a walk and Trotter followed with a single to left field. Labas knocked in Veneziano with a single and Trotter advanced to third. Zitzman entered the game to run for Labas. Trotter crossed the plate on a ground by Minch. Leskanic earned a RBI when she grounded out and Zitzman scored.
Next week, Rowan is back home against Centenary College on Tuesday, March 20 at 3 p.m.
