KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team won two more games at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday. The Profs defeated Austin College (TX), 12-5 and Southwestern University (TX), 4-2. The Profs are undefeated with a 9-0 record.
Against Austin (3-10), right-hander Jamie Minix (sr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) was the winning pitcher in relief. Minix (4-0) gave up three runs, two earned and struck out five batters. Righty Samantha Matulis took the loss. She allowed 14 hits and seven earned runs.
Rowan second baseman Jenny Arcella (so. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) went three for four with four RBIs and a double. Shortstop Ashley Minch (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) and pitcher/designated player Katie Trotter (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) each contributed with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Minch registered two doubles and Trotter had one. Catcher Nicolina Veneziano (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) chipped in with two hits (three at bats), three runs scored and a double. Left fielder Nicole Escudero (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) added two hits and scored one run. Center fielder Shannon Costello (fr. E. Brunswick, NJ/E. Brunswick) went one for two with two RBIs, one double and two runs scored.
For the Roos, catcher Charlotte Trudell totaled three hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Center fielder Briana Slawson collected three hits (four at bats), one RBI and a double. First baseman Heather Farquhar tallied two hits and one RBI.
Austin was ahead 4-1 after three innings. Rowan scored one run in the fourth inning and five in the fifth to take the lead (7-4). With one out, Minch got on base with a double in the fourth inning and she came home on Trotter’s single. In the fifth, Veneziano scored the first run on a passed ball after reaching base with a single. Trotter produced a RBI double, scoring pinch runner Ally Zitzman (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown N.). Costello drove in third baseman Julie Leskanic (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and Trotter with a double. Costello went to third on a passed ball and she came home on Arcella’s hit.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Roos had a RBI double by Slawson. The Profs were up 12-5 with five runs in the sixth. Minch knocked in Veneziano and Escudero with a double. Arcella’s double scored Minch, Trotter and Costello.
Right-hander LeAnne Miller (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) was on the mound for the win against Southwestern (8-9). Miller (4-0) scattered eight hits and had five strikeouts. Starter Lyndsy Maus pitched 3.1 innings in the loss. She (2-6) allowed four hits and three earned runs.
Leskanic went two for four with one run scored. Right fielder Lauren Davis (sr. Ewing, NJEwing) totaled two hits in three trips to the plate, one RBI and one run scored. Veneziano tallied one hit (two at bats) and two RBIs. Arcella had one RBI and scored one run. Trotter and Minch each registered a hit.
For the Pirates, center fielder Taylor Turpin and Pavlicek totaled two hits, one double, in four at bats apiece. Pavlicek also scored one run. First baseman Haley Hughes collected one hit, one RBI and one run scored. Left fielder Tessa Galloway produced a double and one RBI.
All four of Rowan’s runs came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Leskanic and Trotter had back-to-back singles. Arcella singled in Leskanic and went to second on the throw. Trotter crossed the plate on Davis’ single. Veneziano drove in Arcella and Davis with a single.
Southwestern’s two runs came in the fifth. With two outs, Pavlicek had a double and she came home on a single by Hughes. Galloway followed with a RBI double, scoring Hughes.
Next, Rowan plays St. Norbert College (WI) at 9 a.m. and Anderson University (IN) at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14.
