KISSIMMEE, FL – First baseman Stephanie Labas hit a two run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Rowan University softball team a 4-3 victory over Anderson University (IN) at the Rebel Spring Games on Monday.
The game was tied, 2-2 after the sixth inning. The Falcons went ahead, 3-2 after scoring one run in the top of the seventh. Center fielder Katie Lee hit a one out single and stole second. Pinch hitter Yardley Collett ripped a single that plated Lee. Rowan turned a double play to end the inning. In the bottom half, center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) registered a two out single. Labas (jr. Millville, NJ/Millville) followed with the game-winning home run.
Rowan improves to 7-0 on the season. The Profs are ranked 17th in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 Poll. Anderson has a 1-2 record. Right-hander LeAnne Miller (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) earned the win in relief. She (3-0) pitched the final 0.2 innings. Righty Jamie Minix (sr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) started the game and allowed three earned runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings. Pitcher Monica Crowe (sr. Muncie, IN) took the loss. She (1-1) surrendered four earned runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings.
Labas finished the game with two hits (four at bats), two RBIs, two runs scored, a double and a homer. It was her fifth home run of the season. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) went two for three with one RBI. Veneziano chipped in with one hit (four at bats) and one run scored. Center fielder Shannon Costello (fr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) added one hit (one at bat) and one RBI. Shortstop Ashley Minch (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) scored once.
For the Falcons, catcher Stephanie Atkins was two for three with two RBIs. Collett contributed with one hit (one at bat) and one RBI. Lee posted one hit (four at bats) and one run scored. Designated hitter Amy Wuestefeld and pinch runner Samantha Steele each crossed the plate once.
Rowan took a 2-0 lead with one run in the second and fifth innings. Minch was hit by a pitch in the second. She came home on Costello’s single. Labas recorded a two out double in the fifth. Leskanic drove her in with a single. In the top of the sixth, Atkins knocked in Wuestefeld and Steele with a base hit.
The Profs continue at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday, March 13. Rowan plays Austin College (TX) at 1 p.m. and Southwestern University (TX) at 3 p.m.
