Women's Indoor Track Takes Third At NJAC Championships

NEW YORK, NY – The Rowan University women’s indoor track team took third place at the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships on Friday.  The conference championships were held at the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory.

Jena Peacock (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) won the one mile run in 5:06.27.  Her time was an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships qualifier (5:16.50).  Magan Kustera (so. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) was the winner in the high jump with a height of 5’ 2.25” (1.58 meters), which tied her season best.  She also qualified for the ECACs (1.58 meters).

The Profs ran a first place and record time of 9:26.87 in the 4x800 meter relay.  Christina Huynh (jr. Lake Hiawatha, NJ/Parsippany), Ashlee Hitchner (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Delsea Reg.), Peacock and Vanessa Wright (so. Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) made up the 4x800.  They broke the school (9:35.31, 2010) and meet (9:39.43, 2011) records in addition to qualifying (10:12.00) for ECACs.  The distance medley relay came in first (12:35.78) with Brianna Streater (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown), Samantha Stapleton (so. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown), Huynh and Wright.  Their time was an ECAC Championships qualifier (13:00.00). 

The 4x200 meter relay finished third (1:47.47) with a season best time and an ECACs requirement (1:50.50).  The 4x200 included Tashay Wilson (fr. Hillside, NJ/Hillside), Jessica Carlson (so. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.), Kayla Leahey (so. Keansburg, NJ/Warwick Valley) and Shantel Beckford (fr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway).  The 4x400 meter relay had a fourth place with a time of 4:03.36.  The 4x400 consisted of Wilson, Brianna Streater,  Alexus Streater (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Melirah Searcy (fr. Edison, NJ/Edison).

Beckford came in second (8.01) in the 60 meters.  She ran a season best of 7.97 in the prelims, which was an ECAC qualifier (8.10). Carlson took third place in the 60 meter hurdles with a season best time of 9.34.  She qualified (9.45) for the ECAC Championships.  Carlson also finished fourth in the triple jump with 36’ 1.5” (11.01 meters) and she qualified (10.85 meters) for the ECAC Championships.  Searcy captured third in the 400 meters with a season best of 59.35.  Her time was better than the ECAC qualifier (60.50).  Brenda Mendez (fr. Glassboro, NJ/Delsea Reg.) had a fourth place (11:08.02) in the 3000 meters.  Leahey came in fourth in the pole vault with a height of 10’ (3.05 meters).        

Emily Spieker (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) came in second in the weight throw with a toss of 42’ 9.75” (13.05 meters).  Jess Lomanaco (so. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) finished sixth (40’ 2”, 12.24 meters) and Steph Greco (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick) was 10th (33’ 11.5”, 10.35 meters).  Lomanaco also had a fifth place in the shot put with a throw of 35’ 1.75” (10.71 meters).  Arielle Moore (so. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) was ninth (32’ 11”, 10.03 meters) and Greco followed in 12th place (30’ 4.25”, 9.25 meters).

In the 800 meters, Hitchner finished sixth (2:21.40) followed by Peacock seventh (2:22.25).  They both qualified (2:22.50) for the ECAC Championships.  Brianna Streater and Stapleton were ninth (2:24.06) and 10th (2:26.55) respectively.  Alexus Streater took sixth (5:27.19) in the one mile run.  Joy Hanke (jr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) came in sixth (19:43.96) in the 5000 meters and Ashley White (jr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) was ninth (20:33.82). 

Wilson ran a season best time of 1:00.43 in the 400 meters for sixth place and qualified (60.50) for the ECAC Championships.  She leaped 15’ 5.75” (4.72 meters) and took eighth in the long jump.  In addition, Wilson was 12th (27.60) in the 200 meters.  Sam Kamper (so. Middletown, NJ/Middletown N.) tied for seventh in the high jump with 4’ 8.25” (1.43 meters).  Beckford came in eighth (34’ 0.75”, 10.38 meters) in the triple jump.  She was also eighth in the 200 meters with a season best of 26.95.  Ana Kolbach (fr. Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) finished ninth in the pole vault with a season best of 9’ 0.25” (2.75 meters).  Jamie Thompson (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick) had a ninth place (9.66) in the 60 meter hurdles and Francesca Contino (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) was 12th (10.41). 

Next, Rowan travels back to The Armory for the ECAC Championships on Friday-Saturday, March 2-3.  The championships start at 11 a.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
