Rowan Women Finish Second At CTC Indoor Track Championships

MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Rowan University women’s indoor track team finished second at the Collegiate Track Conference Championships on Saturday.  The championships were held at Wesleyan University.   

The Profs totaled 161 points and they were one point behind first place Georgian Court University with 162.  There were 17 schools competing in the women’s division. 

Rowan won the 4x800 meter and distance medley relays with times of 9:51.98 and 12:35.08 respectively.  Both relays qualified (4x800 – 10:12.00, distance medley – 13:00.00) for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships.  The 4x800 consisted of Kayla Leahey (so. Keansburg, NJ/Warwick Valley), Ashlee Hitchner (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Delsea Reg.), Vanessa Wright (so. Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) and Jena Peacock (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Our Lady of Mercy Academy).  Sammar Abueldoleh (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Hitchner, Leahey and Wright were on the distance medley.   

The 4x400 meter relay took second (4:07.77) and qualified for ECACs (4:09.00) with Samantha Stapleton (so. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown), Brianna Streater (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown), Alexus Streater (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Melirah Searcy (fr. Edison, NJ/Edison).  Shantel Beckford (fr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway), Jessica Carlson (so. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.), Leahey and Tashay Wilson (fr. Hillside, NJ/Hillside) made up the third place (1:48.56) 4x200 meter relay.  Their time was better than the ECAC requirement of 1:50.50.

Peacock was the winner in the 800 meters (2:21.08) and the one mile (5:04.86).  Both of her times were ECAC qualifiers (800 – 2:22.50, one mile – 5:16.50).  Hitchner came in first (3:04.62) in the 1000 meters and qualified for the ECAC Championships (3:08.00). Abueldoleh won (11:04.08) the 3000 meters and she had a third place (5:28.42) in the one mile.  Searcy took second (2:21.75) in the 800 meters.  Her time was an ECAC qualifier (2:22.50).  She also had a third place in the 400 meters with an ECAC qualifying (60.50) time of 1:00.37.  Brenda Mendez (fr. Glassboro, NJ/Delsea Reg.) took second (11:09.12) in the 3000 meters.  Jenn Rawls (jr. Runnemede, NJ/Highland Reg.) ran 18:17.84 for second place in the 5000 meters and qualified for the ECAC Championships (18:44.00).

Brianna Streater came in third (1:22.76) in the 500 meters followed by Stapleton fourth (1:23.49).  Magan Kustera (so. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) finished third in the high jump with a height of 5’ 2.25” (1.58 meters) and she just qualified for the ECACs (1.58 meters).  Leahey had a third place finish in the pole vault with 9’ 6.25” (2.90 meters).  Carlson came in third in the triple jump with a leap of 34’ 4.25” (10.47 meters).  She was also seventh (9.58) in the 60 meter hurdles.  Alexus Streater took fourth (3:08.64) in the 1000 meters.  Emily Spieker (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) broke the school record in the weight throw with 42’ 11.5” (13.09 meters) and took fifth place.  The old mark was 39’ 8.75” (12.11 meters) by Sylvia Kearney in 2001.

Beckford finished fifth (8.11) in the 60 meters while Tiffany Chamberlain (jr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) was fifth (9.52) in the 60 meter hurdles.  Chamberlain was also ninth (1:03.83) in the 400 meters.  Sam Kamper (so. Middletown, NJ/Middletown N.) tied for sixth (4’ 10.25”, 1.48 meters) in the high jump.  Ashley White (jr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) finished eighth (20:15.61) in the 5000 meters.  Wilson had a 10th place (27.38) in the 200 meters. 

Next week, Rowan will compete at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday, February 18 at 11 a.m.
