UNION, NJ – The Kean University women’s basketball team defeated Rowan University, 77-54 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
The Cougars, ranked 21st in the nation, have a 19-3 record with a 10-0 conference mark. The Profs fall to 8-13 overall and 2-8 in the NJAC. Kean had four players that scored in double figures. Guard Naimah Clemons (jr. Newark, NJ/Newark Tech) recorded a double-double with 30 points and 11 rebounds. Clemons also dished eight assists. Center/forward Simone Smith (jr. Colonia, NJ/Colonia) contributed with 14 points and five boards. Guard Brittany Powell (sr. Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Reg.) and forward Danielle McFadden (sr. Odenton, MD/Arundel) added 11 and 10 points respectively. McFadden also totaled seven rebounds. Forward Kyanne Sager (jr. Westminster, VT/Kearsarge Reg.) produced nine boards.
For the Profs, forward Lauren Gregg (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingwood) scored 14 points. Guard Alissa Lamey (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) totaled seven points, five rebounds and five assists. Forward Erin Farrell (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had seven boards along with six points.
After the first half, Kean was ahead 35-22. At the 19-minute mark, Rowan was up by four points (6-2) after a layup by Lamey. The Cougars took the lead (13-8) with an 11-2 run that ended at 13:13. Clemons and McFadden each registered four points while Powell hit a three. Gregg’s basket at 10:41 tied the score at 13. Kean led by five (18-13) with a foul shot by Clemons with 8:52 remaining. Farrell cut the deficit to three (18-15) at 7:17 with a layup. Clemons nailed two straight three-pointers (6:59, 6:29) and Smith followed with a layup (6:03) for an 11-point advantage (26-15).
Rowan scored five straight points and trailed by six (26-20) at 4:13. Guard Chanelle Banta (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) and Gregg each had a basket while Lamey made a free throw. The Cougars closed out the period with a 9-2 surge. Smith led the way with four points, Clemons and McFadden had two apiece and Sager added one. Clemons finished with 17 points.
In the second stanza, Lamey made a layup at 17:48 and the Profs trailed by seven points (37-30). Guard/forward Erika Jones (sr. Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) increased the lead to 10 (42-32) with a three-pointer at 16:25. At 13:46, the Cougars had a six-point advantage (44-38). They pulled away with a 16-2 run in a span of 4:42. Kean led 60-40 with 9:04 on the clock. Clemons and Smith each scored six points while Powell and Sager had two apiece.
Powell’s layup at 7:31 gave the Cougars a 23 point advantage (67-44). Their biggest lead of the game was 25 (71-46) after a basket by Sager with 5:45 left.
