Rutgers-Camden Wins 66-58 Over Rowan

GLASSBORO, NJ  – The Rutgers-Camden women’s basketball team won 66-58 over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday evening.

The Scarlet Raptors have a 2-1 record with a 1-1 conference mark.  The Profs are 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the NJAC.  Guard Lillian Chukwueze (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) led the way with a game-high 29 points and 10 rebounds.  Forward Brittany Turner (sr. Belleville, NJ/Queen of Peace) followed with 21 points and eight boards.  Center Rachel Hodge (so. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) grabbed 11 rebounds.  Guard Irene Grimanis (so. Brooklawn, NJ/Gloucester) dished five assists.

For Rowan, center Kate Matthews (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) totaled 18 points and six rebounds.  Guard Eyandra Molina (sr. Pleasantville, NJ/Washington Irving (NY)) contributed with 16 points and six steals.  Guards Jade Bonder (so. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Bria Hill (so. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) each added seven points.    

In the second period, Rutgers-Camden had a 12 point lead (44-32) at 13:29 after a jumper by center Tin Croxton (jr. Deptford, NJ/Deptford).  Center Stephanie Krauss (sr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) had a basket at 12:18 and Rowan trailed 46-39.  At 10:32, the Scarlet Raptors were ahead by nine (48-39).  The Profs had six straight points to cut the deficit to three (48-45) at 7:10.  Molina made two baskets while Krauss and Matthews each had a foul shot.  Hill’s layup at 4:56 put the Profs within one point (52-51). 

With 4:07 left, Bonder had a basket, which made the score 54-53.  Chukwueze had a layup (3:49) and Turner followed with a basket and free throw (3:25) to push the advantage to six (59-53).  Molina’s layup pulled the Profs within two (59-57) with 2:58 remaining.  Rutgers-Camden ended the game with a 7-1 run.  Chukwueze produced four of the seven points.  She led all scorers in the final half with 18 points. 

Molina’s jumper tied the score at six (15:09) in the first half.  Rutgers-Camden had baskets by Turner (14:32) and Chukwueze (13:56) to lead 10-6.  Matthews had a layup at 13:17 to trail by one point (10-9).  At 12:15, Chukwueze made a basket for a four point advantage (13-9).  Hill scored with a layup and made a free throw at 7:09 and Rowan was down by one (17-16). 

The Scarlet Raptors had a 7-0 run to go up by eight points (24-16) with 3:16 left.  Chukwueze contributed with a three, Turner had two foul shots and Hodge hit a jumper.  Guard Lisa Lee’s (sr. Penns Grove, NJ/Penns Grove) layup at the 47 second mark made the score 30-22.  Krauss had the last basket (:34) and the Profs trailed 30-24 at the intermission.

Rowan travels to New Jersey City University on Saturday, December 1 for a 2 p.m. NJAC contest.
