GLASSBORO, NJ – The Montclair State University women’s basketball team defeated Rowan University in the home opener on Tuesday night.
The Red Hawks are 3-0 overall and the Profs have a 2-1 record. It was the first New Jersey Athletic Conference game for both teams.
Montclair State had four players that scored in double figures. Forward Melissa Tobie (so. Elizabeth, NJ/Roselle Catholic) led the way with 21 points. Forward Taylor Jeffers (sr. Franklin Twp., NJ/Franklin) contributed with 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Guard Janitza Aquino (so. Kearny, NJ/Kearny) chipped in with 11 points. Guard Shalette Brown (fr. Somerset, NJ/Franklin Twp.) produced 10 points, eight boards and seven steals.
For Rowan, center Kate Matthews (so. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) recorded a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Guard Alexis Govan (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Camden City Tech. Schools) scored eight points and guard Jade Bonder (so. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) followed with six.
In the first half, the Profs were ahead by one point (5-4) at 17:12. Montclair State had a 10-0 run to take the lead 14-5 with 14:04 remaining. Brown contributed with eight points and Tobie added two. The Profs pulled within three (14-11) after baskets by Matthews (12:46), center Stephanie Krauss (sr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) (12:20) and Bonder (11:53).
The Red Hawks scored 14 straight points for a 17 point advantage (28-11) at 7:37. Aquino produced six points in the surge. With 5:58 left, Montclair State was up 30-15. A 9-0 run by the Red Hawks increased the lead to 24 points (39-15) at 2:05. Tobie made five points, Aquino followed with three and Jeffers added one. At the intermission, Montclair State led 41-21. Brown topped all scorers with 10 points.
Montclair State started the second period with 10 points in 3:16 for a 30 point advantage (51-21). Guard Eyandra Molina (sr. Pleasantville, NJ/Washington Irving (NY)) hit a jumper at 11:19 and Rowan trailed by 23 points (55-32). Govan nailed a three-pointer (9:59), which made the score 59-37. The 22 points was the closest the Profs came for the remainder of the game.
With 2:38 left, Matthews had a layup and the Red Hawks were ahead 72-43. Montclair State ended the contest with 12 unanswered points. Guard Jordyn Stanley (fr. Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge) and forward Alanna Loyle (jr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) each totaled five points and guard Amanda Fernandez (jr. Beachwood, NJ//Toms River S.) had two.
Next week, Rowan travels to Delaware Valley College on Monday, November 26 for a 7 p.m. contest.
