GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s soccer team lost to Kean University, 2-1 in the semifinals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament on Friday night.
Midfielder/forward Angie Lopez (fr. Rahway, NJ/Rahway) scored the winning goal at 74:23. Kean (11-5-3), the sixth seed, will play the winner of the top seed Montclair State University/fourth seed Richard Stockton College semifinal game on Sunday, November 4 in the conference final. The NJAC champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
The Profs (12-3-1), seeded second, have to wait until Monday, November 4 to see if they receive an at-large bid to the national tournament. Rowan had a bye in the first round of the conference tournament while the Cougars advanced on penalty kicks (3-0) over the third seed The College of New Jersey. Kean and TCNJ tied (2-2) after two overtimes.
Lopez hit the upper right side of the Profs’ net after a cross from the right by forward Carly Seidel (sr. Winslow Twp., NJ/Winslow Twp.). Forward Erika Suhl (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) tied the score at 70:34. She knocked the ball into the bottom right corner of the Cougars’ goal.
Kean was ahead 1-0 after the first half. With 1:56 remaining, Seidel sent a high shot from 15 yards over the reach of Profs’ goalkeeper Maria Dorris (sr. Mantua, NJ/Clearview Reg.). It was Seidel’s 17th goal on the season.
Rowan totaled 20 shots while Kean took seven. Cougars’ goalkeeper KC Nunez (fr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) stopped 12 shots and Dorris made two saves.
