Women's Soccer Falls To Johns Hopkins, 4-2 In NCAA Second Round

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins University women’s soccer team defeated Rowan University, 4-2 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Sunday evening. 

Johns Hopkins (17-4-1) will play Lynchburg College (21-0-3) in the sectionals next weekend.  The sectionals are on Friday and Saturday, November 16 and 17 or Saturday and Sunday, November 17 and 18.  The national semifinals and final are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, November 30 and December 1 at the Blossom Soccer Complex in San Antonio, TX.

The Profs end the season with a 13-4-1 record.  In the first round on Saturday, Rowan had a 1-0 shutout over Virginia Wesleyan while Johns Hopkins blanked Lancaster Bible, 5-0.  The Profs received an at-large bid to the national tournament.  It was Rowan’s ninth appearance and eighth straight in the postseason.   

The Blue Jays scored two goals in the second half.  Midfielder Issy Berkey (fr. Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) had a header to the left post at 57:08 off a corner kick.  Midfielder Christina Convey (jr. Roslyn Harbor, NY/North Shore) had the assist.  With 2:09 left, forward Hannah Kronick (so. Westfield NJ/Westfield) headed in a free kick by Berkey.

Johns Hopkins produced 18 shots and Rowan took 10.  For the Blue Jays, goalie Meredith Maguire (sr. Northport, NY/Northport) made three saves while goalkeeper Maria Dorris (sr. Mantua, NJ/Clearview Reg.) stopped seven shots for the Profs.

Johns Hopkins got on the scoreboard first at 10:28.  Midfielder Sydney Teng (so. Fairport, NY/Fairport) hit the bottom right corner of the net from 10 yards out with an assist from forward Kelly Baker (jr. Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield).  Teng recorded three goals in the first round win against Lancaster Bible.  Forward Erika Suhl (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) tied the score at 13:50.  She spun around a Blue Jay defender then put the ball into the right corner.  Forward Jess Durnian (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) picked up an assist.   

Midfielder Hope Lundberg (fr. Rhinelander, WI/Shattuck-St. Mary’s) put Johns Hopkins up 2-1 (19:02).  From the right side of the field, she blasted a shot from 30 yards into the top left corner of the goal.  Back Miranda Donnian (jr. Sewell, NJ/Clearview Reg.) knotted the score at two.  Her shot, 25 yards out, went inside the left post.  She was named the 2012 New Jersey Athletic Conference’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year.
