GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s soccer team defeated Rutgers-Newark, 4-0 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
The Profs have a 10-2 record with a 6-1 NJAC mark. Rowan was ranked seventh in this week’s South Atlantic Region Rankings. The Scarlet Raiders drop to 3-12-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the conference.
Rowan was ahead 3-0 after the first half. The three goals came in a span of less than two minutes. Midfielder Morgan Muracco (sr. Washington Twp., NJ/Paul VI) started the scoring at 10:34. She hit the lower right corner of the Scarlet Raiders’ net with a pass from the right side by midfielder Michele Ercolano (sr. Emerson, NJ/Paramus Catholic). Ercolano assisted on the second goal at 11:44 when she crossed the ball to midfielder Sherry Oller (so. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan). Oller’s shot went in the lower right corner.
Forward Erika Suhl (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) registered the third goal at 12:30. Oller passed the ball ahead to Suhl who had a breakaway. In the second period, back Miranda Donnian (jr. Sewell, NJ/Clearview Reg.) headed in the third goal at 54:35. Oller crossed the ball to Donnian who was in front of the Rutgers-Newark net.
Rowan collected 21 shots while Rutgers-Newark had two. Goalkeepers Maria Dorris (sr. Mantua, NJ/Clearview Reg.) and Katina Anthony (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddon Twp.) shared the shutout. Dorris played the first half while Anthony made two saves in the second. For the Scarlet Raiders, goalie Victoria Nunez (so. Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) had two saves in the first 11:44 of the game. Goalkeeper Mercedes Lois (fr. Kearny, NJ/Kearny) turned away seven shots in the final 78:16.
Rowan hosts Roanoke College on Monday, October 15 at 5 p.m. It is the final home game of the regular season for the Profs.
