DOVER, DE – The Rowan University women’s basketball team defeated Wesley College, 65-46 in a nonconference game on Monday night.
The Profs have a 6-8 record, while the Wolverines are 2-9. Rowan was led by forward Lauren Creel (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) with 14 points and four steals. Guard Chanelle Banta (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) totaled 13 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Forward Lauren Gregg (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) produced 11 points and seven boards. Guard Alissa Lamey (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) registered six points and eight rebounds. Forward Erin Farrell (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) grabbed seven boards.
For Wesley, guard Jazmine Miller (jr. Dover, DE/Dover) collected 15 points, seven assists and six steals. Guard Pez Scott (fr. Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen) posted 12 points and forward Aleisha Hobbs (fr. Salisbury, MD/Mardela) pulled down 10 rebounds. Center Heather Fuller (jr. Greenwood, DE/Sussex Tech) compiled seven rebounds and four steals.
Rowan started the game with a 13-2 run over the first 3:15. Banta scored seven of the 13 points. Scott’s three-pointer at 14:11 brought Wesley within five (13-8). Miller had a layup at 11:52 to cut the deficit to three (15-12). The Profs scored the next 12 points to go up by 15 (27-12) with 7:28 remaining. Guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (fr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) recorded five points and Creel had four. Guard Haley Thomas (so. Bear, DE/St. Georges Tech) nailed a three at 6:27 to bring the Wolverines within 10 (27-17). It was the closest Wesley came for the remainder of the game. The Profs outscored the Wolverines, 12-6 over the final 6:27 to end the half with a 39-23 advantage. Banta led all first period scorers with 11 points, followed by Creel with eight.
In the second stanza, Wesley pulled within 11 (46-35) after a three-pointer by Miller (14:59) and a layup by Scott (14:30). Gregg’s jumper at the 11 minute mark made the score, 54-37. Wesley trailed by 12 (54-42) following a basket by Miller (10:35) and a three-pointer by guard Katie Kirk (jr. Drexel Hill, PA/Archbishop Prendergast) (10:13). At 3:44, guard Rachelle Allen (jr. Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) hit a layup and the Wolverines were down by 14 (60-46). Lamey had a basket (3:26) and guard Ashley Waring (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) sunk a three-pointer (1:46) to end the scoring.
