Ramapo Tops Rowan, 71-65 In NJAC Game

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Ramapo College women’s basketball team had a 71-65 win over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday afternoon.

The Roadrunners have a 10-3 record with a 2-2 conference mark.  Rowan is 5-8 overall and 1-3 in the NJAC.  Ramapo had four players score in double digits.  Guard Jackie Jerkovich (fr. Secaucus, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) led the way with 14 points.  She hit four of seven three-point attempts.  Guard Alexa Ryan (jr. Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) followed with 11 points off the bench.  Guard Kelly Haspel (fr. Lincroft, NJ/Middletown S.) and forward Micaela Moore (so. Lindenwold, NJ/Lindenwold) registered 10 points apiece.  Forward Lindsey Gripenburg (sr. Bloomingdale, NJ/Butler) pulled down a game-high 10 boards and forward Alex Milne (fr. Howell, NJ/Howell) had eight.

For Rowan, forward Lauren Gregg (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) totaled 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.  Forward Lauren Creel (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) chipped in with 14 points.  Guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (fr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) and forward Erin Farrell (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) both compiled 10 points.  Farrell also grabbed a career best seven rebounds.  Guard Alissa Lamey (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) added eight points and five assists.

Ramapo had a 33-32 halftime advantage.  Rowan went ahead 35-33 on a three-pointer by Gregg at 18:18.  Haspel’s basket tied the game at 35 (17:59).  Schullstrom’s layup at 12:37 made the score, 45-45.  The Profs had back-to-back baskets from guard Chanelle Banta (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) (11:52) and Schullstrom (11:10) to go ahead by four (49-45).  Ramapo scored the next eight points for a four point lead (53-49) at 9:40.  Center Brittany Howes (so. Freehold, NJ/Colts Neck) and Jerkovich each scored three points and Ryan had two.

Milne had a layup at 8:30 and the Profs trailed by four (55-51).  Farrell answered with baskets at 8:06 and 6:17 to tie the game at 55.  Creel sunk two free throws at 5:45 and the score was 57-57.  She added a jumper at 4:54 to put Rowan up by two (59-57).  The Roadrunners went on an 8-0 run for a six point advantage (65-59) with 3:09 remaining.  Jerkovich hit two three-pointers (4:36, 3:58) and Milne had a layup (3:09).  The Profs fought back to tie the game (65-65).  Gregg recorded baskets at 1:18 and 1:08 and Schullstrom made two foul shots at the 51 second mark.  Guard Faith Flannery (jr. Keansburg, NJ/Keansburg) had a layup (:30) to put Ramapo up, 67-65.  Ryan (:11) and Gripenburg (:05) each converted two free throws to seal the win.  Gregg tallied 11 points in the second half, while Jerkovich had nine for Ramapo.

In the first period, the Profs had a 14-12 lead at 14:29.  The Roadrunners recorded an 11-0 surge to take a 23-14 lead at 10:01.  Moore collected four of the 11 points.  Ryan’s layup at 4:35 extended the advantage to 11 (30-19).  Three-pointers by Lamey (4:16) and Schullstrom (3:51) cut the deficit to five (30-25).  Ramapo was up, 33-27 after two foul shots by Ryan at 2:59.  Lamey nailed a three-pointer and Rowan trailed by three (33-30) at 2:47.  Creel’s two free throws with 40 seconds remaining brought the Profs within one (33-32) at the intermission.

Rowan travels to Wesley College for a nonconference game on Monday, January 9 at 7 p.m.
