CAMDEN, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team defeated conference opponent Rutgers-Camden, 65-57 on Wednesday night.
The Profs improve to 8-11 overall and 2-6 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Scarlet Raptors have a 12-7 record with a 2-6 conference mark. Forward Lauren Gregg (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) led the way with a game-high 14 points and 14 rebounds, 12 were defensive boards. Guard Alissa Lamey (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) contributed with 13 points, 11 assists and six rebounds. Guard Kaitlin Schullstrom (fr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) came off the bench for 13 points and forward Erin Farrell (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) added nine.
For Rutgers-Camden, center Jasmin Ramos (fr. Oxford, NJ/Warren Hills Reg.) and guard Alex Koutras (jr. Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) each scored 12 points. Ramos also collected nine rebounds. Forward Brittany Turner (sr. Belleville, NJ/Queen of Peace) totaled 11 points and eight boards. Guard/forward Irene Grimanis (fr. Brooklawn, NJ/Gloucester) and forward Lillian Chukwueze (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) grabbed 15 and 13 rebounds respectively.
The Scarlet Raptors started the game with an 11-0 run in 3:51. Koutras had four of the 11 points while guard Kristina Cox (sr. Deptford, NJ/Deptford) had a three-pointer. Ramos and Turner each added a basket. The Profs answered with 14 straight points to take the lead by three (14-11) at 11:24. Schullstrom produced five of the 14 points. Cox’s three at 8:26 tied the score at 16 and Turner made a foul shot at 8:01 to go ahead by one (17-16). Rowan was up by four points (21-17) after a layup (7:51) from Schullstrom and a three-pointer (6:58) by Lamey. With 2:37 remaining, guard Ashley Waring (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) stretched the Profs’ lead to six (31-25) with a jumper. Rutgers-Camden ended the half with a 7-0 surge for a one-point advantage (32-31). Ramos had a jump shot (2:04), Koutras nailed a three (1:59) and Turner made a layup (1:21).
There were two ties in the second period before Rowan took the lead for good. Gregg hit a three at 19:46 and the Profs were up 34-32. Cox’s jumper tied the score (34-34) at 19:05 and Koutras followed with a basket (36-34) at 18:42. Gregg had a layup at 17:10 for the last tie (36-36) and she made a free throw (16:55). Rowan never trailed for the remainder of the game. Lamey (16:17), Gregg (15:46) and Schullstrom (15:20) each had a basket for a seven point advantage (43-36). Turner’s two foul shots (12:11) cut the deficit to four points (45-41).
Rowan had a 10 point advantage (51-41) after a layup by Schullstrom with 10:30 left. Ramos (6:42) and Grimanis (6:14) scored back-to-back baskets and the Scarlet Raptors trailed by two points (53-51). With 1:20 on the clock, Turner’s layup made the score 59-57. The Profs sealed the win with six straight points for the final score 65-57. Farrell registered five points and Lamey had one.
Next, Rowan hosts William Paterson University on Saturday, January 28 in a 1 p.m. conference game.
