GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team lost to visiting Richard Stockton College, 71-68 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
The Ospreys are 12-4 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Profs have a 6-10 record with a 1-5 NJAC mark. Guard Aspen Price-Perry (jr. Lindenwold, NJ/Lindenwold) led the way with 17 points. Center LaTonya Oliver (sr. West Berlin, NJ/Overbrook) totaled 15 points and 15 rebounds. It was her 10th double-double on the season. Forward Lauren Alwan (so. Winslow, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) chipped in with 12 points off the bench. Forward Kelsey Brown (fr. Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) pulled down 10 boards.
For Rowan, forward Lauren Creel (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) scored a game-high 20 points. She also collected six rebounds. Forward Lauren Gregg (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) produced 19 points and eight rebounds. Forward Erin Farrell (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) grabbed a career high 13 rebounds along with eight points. Guards Chanelle Banta (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) and Alissa Lamey (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) each contributed with seven points. Lamey also dished six assists.
After trailing by 11 points, Richard Stockton came back to lead by one (28-27) at the end of the first half. Rowan started the game with a 13-4 run in the first 5:49. Lamey ended the surge with a three-pointer while Farrell contributed with four points. Guard Kaitlin Schullstrom’s (fr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) three at 9:19 made the score 23-12. Creel hit two foul shots at 7:14 to lead by 11 points (27-16). The Ospreys ended the period with 12 unanswered points. Six different players contributed in the rally. Guard Sarah Gibbs (jr. Ocean View, NJ/Ocean City) cut the deficit to one (27-26) when she converted the first of two free throws with 1:21 remaining. At the 22 second mark, guard Alex Nardoza (fr. Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge) put the Ospreys ahead 28-27 with a layup.
In the second half, the Profs scored two straight baskets to go ahead 31-28. Lamey (19:41) and Gregg (19:29) each had a layup. Gregg’s two foul shots made the score 35-32 at 17:47. The Ospreys took the lead 39-35 after Oliver’s layup (16:34), a three-pointer by Gibbs (16:18) and Alwan’s basket (15:41). Price-Perry’s layup at 13:29 increased the advantage to eight (45-37). With 11:43 left, Richard Stockton was up 47-41. Gregg nailed a three-pointer (11:25), Creel had a layup (11:04) and Lamey tied the score at 47 with a foul shot (10:28).
The Ospreys followed with 11 straight points to retake the lead 58-47 at 6:59. Oliver contributed with five points followed by Price-Perry with four and Alwan had two. Creel (2:45) and Farrell (1:45) each scored a basket to cut the deficit to three (64-61). In the final 1:19, the Ospreys were seven for 10 from the line. Price-Perry sealed the win with two free throws at the three-second mark. Rowan’s last points came on a three-pointer (71-68) by Banta as time expired.
Rowan travels to Montclair State University on Saturday, January 21 for a 3 p.m. conference game.
