YORK, PA – The Rowan University women’s volleyball team lost two matches on the first day of the Spartan Invitational hosted by York College (PA). The Profs were defeated by Moravian College, 3-0 and the University of Rochester, 3-1.
The two-day tournament continues on Saturday, September 24. At 10 a.m., Rowan faces Salisbury University and Moravian College takes on Rochester. York plays Centenary College and Swarthmore has a match against SUNY Institute of Technology at noon. The tournament moves to pool play at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
In the other matches on Friday, Salisbury topped Rochester, 3-2 and York beat SUNY Institute of Technology, 3-1. Swarthmore had a 3-0 victory over Centenary and Salisbury posted a 3-1 win over Moravian. Later on Friday, York plays Swarthmore and Centenary faces SUNY Institute of Technology at 9 a.m.
Versus Moravian (10-5), the set scores were 25-20, 25-20 and 25-13. For Rowan (5-3), middle blocker Nikki Binetti (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) totaled five kills and three blocks. Outside hitters/middle blocker Krissy Collins (so. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added five kills and two blocks. Outside hitter/middle blocker Sarah Hanrahan (fr. Montvale, NJ/Pascack Hills) collected seven blocks. Setters Kelsey Donovan (so. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) and Brooke Hassan (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) tallied nine and eight assists respectively. Defensive specialists Casey Grasso (so. Wilmington, DE/Alexis I. duPont) and Sarah Betancourt (sr. Harrington, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) both recorded nine digs.
Against Rochester (10-5), the set scores were 25-23, 22-25, 28-26 and 25-9. Binetti posted seven kills and three blocks. Collins compiled five kills, four digs, four blocks and one service ace. Outside hitter/middle blocker Dakota Oeskovic (so. Pine Beach, NJ/Toms River S.) contributed with six kills and five digs. Outside hitter/middle blocker Kirstin Sciolaro (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) had five kills and four blocks. Donovan produced 19 assists, eight digs and three service aces, while Hassan had nine assists, five digs and two aces. Libero Lauren Ruffalo (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had a team-high 30 digs and two service aces. Betancourt chipped in with 12 digs.
