Rowan Falls to Salisbury University, 6-4 at NCAA Regional Tournament

SALISBURY, MD – The Rowan University softball team lost to Salisbury University, 6-4 on the fourth day of the NCAA Regional Tournament. The regional was held at Salisbury University.

The third seed Salisbury (36-5) will face the fifth seed Christopher Newport University (33-10) in the final round. The second seed Rowan University finishes the season with a 31-13 record. In the first game on Sunday, Rowan defeated the seventh seed Shenandoah University, 8-1.

Pitcher Kelly Leary (sr. Severn, MD/Glen Burnie) earned the win in relief. Leary (12-2) threw 4.2 innings and allowed two earned run on six hits. Right-hander Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) took the loss. Minix (15-7) went 5.1 innings. She gave up eight hits and five runs, four were earned. Minix was named to the All-Tournament Team along with left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) and shortstop Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.).

For the Seagulls, center fielder Sarah Alpaugh (so. Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) was two for four with a home run. First baseman Harley Hill (fr. Huningtown, MD/Huntingtown) contributed with a double and two RBIs. Right fielder Lindsay McCabe (so. Frankford, DE/Indian River) had two hits in two trips to the plate and one run scored.

Third baseman Casey Zaino (jr. Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook Reg.) recorded a home run and two RBIs. Catcher Michelle Gravdahl (so. Ellicott City, MD/Long Reach) added a double and scored one run. Left fielder Hannah Mills (so. Parksley, VA/Arcadia) registered one hit (two at bats) and one RBI. Designated player Lindsay Brown (so. Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) tallied one hit while second baseman Carly Read (so. Catonsville, MD/Seton Keough) and shortstop Kristin Lord (sr. Denton, MD/North Caroline) each scored one run.

Roselle collected two hits (four at bats), a double, one RBI and two runs scored. First baseman Stephanie Labas (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) contributed with a double and two RBIs. Minch had a double and one RBI.

Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) and third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) had one hit (three at bats) and one run scored apiece. Designated player Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland), second baseman Nicole Escudero (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), catcher Sam Stevens (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) and right fielder Lauren Davis (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) all produced one hit.

The score was tied at two after three innings. Salisbury scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 6-2 advantage. McCabe led off with a single to center field and went to second on Mills’ sacrifice bunt. Zaino blasted a two run shot over the left field fence. Hill drove in Read and Lord with a double to right center field. Rowan had two runs in the top of the seventh. With one out, Roselle had a single and Veneziano followed with a double. Labas ripped a double to left center field, scoring Roselle and Veneziano.

The Seagulls started the game with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Mills had a RBI single down the left field line that sent home Gravdahl. The Profs took the lead 2-1 in the top of the third. Leskanic had a lead-off single. Roselle followed with a double that scored Leskanic and she went to third on an error. Minch plated Roselle with a double to right center field. Salisbury tied the score in the bottom half with a solo home run by Alpaugh.

The national softball tournament is double elimination. The regional winner advances to the national championship that is scheduled for Friday-Tuesday, May 20-24 at the Moyer Complex in Salem, VA. The results and schedule for the Salisbury regional are below.
