SALISBURY, MD – The Rowan University softball team defeated Farmingdale State College, 4-2 on the second day of the NCAA Regional Tournament. The regional continues at Salisbury University, Saturday-Monday, May 14-16.
Rowan (29-12), the second seed, will play the top seed Emory University (41-3-1) on Saturday at 10 a.m. The sixth seed Farmingdale State ends the season with a 32-7 record. In the first game on Friday, the eighth seed Kean University (17-26) knocked out the fourth seed Virginia Wesleyan College (29-11) with a 13-5 victory. The fifth seed Christopher Newport University (33-10) upset Emory, 7-3 in 13 innings.
Right-hander Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) threw a complete game for the win. Minix (13-6) gave up seven hits and two runs, one was earned. Righty Hope Zino (jr. Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) had the loss on the mound. Zino (2-3) allowed five hits and four unearned runs. She struck out four batters.
Left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) led the Profs with a double and two RBIs. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) was one for four at the plate with one RBI and one run scored. Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield), shortstop Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) and catcher Sam Stevens (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) all contributed with one hit. Second baseman Jenny Arcella (fr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley), pinch runner Nicole Escudero (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and right fielder Lauren Davis (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) each scored one run.
For the Rams, center fielder Kaitlin Keenan (jr. West Islip, NY/West Islip) was two for four at bat. Shortstop Nicole Farber (sr. Oakdale, NY/Connetquot) registered two hits (three at bats) and one run scored. First baseman Aubrey Walker (jr. West Babylon, NY/West Babyon) and second baseman Madison Snyder (jr. Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford) each had one hit. Designated player Amanda Morelli (fr. Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) added one hit (three at bats) and scored one run. Right fielder Jennifer Jarczynski (so. West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) recorded one RBI.
Farmingdale State went up 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Morelli singled to left center field. Keenan followed with a hit to the left side, moving Morelli to second. Left fielder Rebecca Richman (jr. West Islip, NY/West Islip) reached base on an error, scoring Morelli.
Rowan took the lead, 4-1 in the top of the sixth. Arcella led off with a walk. Pinch hitter Ashlie Gaynor (jr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) got on base with a fielder’s choice and Arcella was safe at second due to an error. Escudero replaced Gaynor at first base. Davis reached base on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on an error. Escudero went to third and Arcella scored on the same error. Leskanic plated Escudero with a single and Roselle registered a two RBI double. Davis and Leskanic both crossed the plate on Roselle’s hit.
In the bottom half, Farmingdale State scored one run and trailed 4-2. Farber and Snyder had back-to-back singles up the middle. Third baseman Kristen Flint (so. Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) moved both runners a base with a sacrifice bunt. Jarczynski grounded out, scoring Farber.

There are 60 teams that are competing in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Tournament. There are two six team regional sites and six eight team regional sites. Forty-one conferences received automatic bids (Pool A) and two independents were selected for the championship from Pool B. The 17 remaining schools were selected on an at-large basis from the automatic qualifying conferences and the remaining independent institutions.
