MAHWAH, NJ – The Rowan University softball team lost both games of a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader at Ramapo College on Saturday. The Roadrunners won the first game, 6-5 in eight innings and took the second, 4-1.
Ramapo has a 17-3 record with a 4-2 conference mark. Rowan is 16-7 overall and 2-2 in the NJAC. Right-hander Deanna Giordano (sr. Clifton, NJ/Clifton) was the winning pitcher in the opener. Giordano (7-2) gave up four earned runs and struck out eight batters. Righty Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/WEast Brunswick) totaled 10 strikeouts in the loss.
For the Roadrunners, right fielder Danielle Rothenberger (jr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) was two for four with three RBIs and a home run. First baseman Janet Brown (so. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) totaled three hits in five at bats and scored one run. Shortstop Kelsey Higgins (so. Wall, NJ/Wall) contributed with two hits (three at bats), a double, one RBI and one run scored. Left fielder Tiffany Fischer (jr. Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) and catcher Stephanie Malgeri (sr. Montville, NJ/Montville) each had one RBI.
Catcher Sam Stevens (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) registered three hits (four at bats), three RBIs, a double and a home run for the Profs. Left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) contributed with two hits in five trips to the plate, one RBI, a double and one run scored. Second baseman Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) was two for four with one run scored and a triple. Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) added one hit (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored.
Rowan trailed 5-3 going into the seventh inning. Stevens knocked in Roselle and Minch with a double to right field. Roselle and Minch both got on base with a single. Ramapo scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Malgeri reached base on a fielder’s choice and Fischer came home on an error.
The score was tied at one after the second inning. Pinch runner Nicole Escudero (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) scored the Profs’ run on an error with Veneziano at bat. Higgins recorded a RBI double for the Roadrunners. In the bottom of the third, Ramapo went ahead 3-1 with a two run homer by Rothenberger.
Rowan had two runs in the fourth for a 3-3 tie. Stevens led off with a solo home run and Roselle plated Veneziano with a double. In the bottom half, Ramapo went up 5-3. Fischer walked with the bases loaded and center fielder Ashley Schirripa (so. Staten Island, N/Fontbonne Hall Academy) went home. Higgins scored on an error.
Right-hander Lyndsay Buehler (sr. River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) had the win on the mound in the nightcap. She (8-1) scattered five hits and only allowed one earned run. Righty Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) suffered the loss. In five innings, she (6-4) gave up five hits and two earned runs.
Rothenberger registered three hits in four at bats, three RBIs, a double and a home run. Schirripa contributed with two hits (four at bats) and one RBI. Malgeri went two for four. Third baseman Krystal Kmiechick (jr. Waretown, NJ/Southern Reg.) added two hits (three at bats) and scored one run. Fischer tallied one hit (four at bats) and one run scored.
For Rowan, second baseman Jenny Arcella (fr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) went two for two with a double and one RBI. Designated player Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland), first baseman Stephanie Labas (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) and third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) each had a hit.
Ramapo led 2-0 after the third inning. Fischer led off with a single and Rothenberger followed with a homer to right field. The Roadrunners added one run in the fourth. Rothenberger knocked in Kmiechick with a single to right. In the top of the fifth, Ramapo went up 4-0 with a RBI single by Schirripa. Rowan’s run came in the bottom half. Arcella recorded a RBI double, scoring Roselle.
Rowan plays at home against Richard Stockton College on Sunday, April 10 at noon.
