GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept New Jersey City University, 8-0 (6 inn.) and 12-3 (5 inn.) in the last New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) games of the regular season.
The Profs are 28-9 overall and 14-4 in the conference. Rowan clinches the number one seed for the NJAC Championship Tournament. The Profs will have a first round game at home on Tuesday, May 3 and they will host the remainder of the conference tournament on Friday-Sunday, May 6-8. The Gothic Knights end the year with a 12-26 record and a 1-17 NJAC mark.
In the opener, right-hander Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) threw four innings and only allowed four hits. She (16-5) struck out five batters. Righty Erika Knorr (sr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) gave up just one hit in the last two innings. Right-hander Ashley O’Beirne (so. Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) took the loss.
Rowan second baseman Jenny Arcella (fr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) was two for three with one RBI and one run scored. Catcher Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield), first baseman Stephanie Labas (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) and third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) each contributed with one hit, two RBIs and one run scored. Left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) chipped in with two hits (four at bats) and one run scored. Designated player Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) registered one hit (three at bats) and two runs scored.
For NJCU, left fielder Janissa Cardona (fr. Elizabeth, NJ/Eliazbeth) went two for three. Center fielder Jess Mucerino (jr. Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) and catcher Alexandra DiIorio (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) each recorded a double.
The Profs scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning. Leskanic knocked in the first two runs with a single. Veneziano plated two more with a single up the middle and Labas drove in two runs with a hit. Arcella’s single through the left side scored the last run of the inning. The Profs ended the game early because of the eight run rule with one run in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded, pinch hitter/right fielder Nicole Escudero (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Landi.
Right-hander Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) pitched four innings for the victory in the second contest. Minix (12-4) gave up one hit and two earned runs. Knorr went the fifth inning and did not give up a hit. Mucerino had the loss on the mound.
Shortstop Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) totaled three doubles (three at bats), four RBIs and two runs scored. Catcher Sam Stevens (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) and Escudero collected one hit and two RBIs apiece. Roselle was two for three with two runs scored. Landi produced one hit (three at bats), one RBI and two runs scored. Veneziano and Labas both had one hit, one RBI and one run scored.
Catcher Marissa Bariso (fr. Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) went one for one with two RBIs, a double and one run scored for New Jersey City. Shortstop Megan Ginter (jr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) and Mucerino each scored one run.
The Profs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Minch hit a double down the left field line that plated Roselle and Veneziano. Stevens followed with a a two RBI single up the middle. Rowan tacked on four more runs in the second. Veneziano and Landi had back-to-back RBI singles. Landi crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Minch knocked in Arcella with a double. In the bottom half, the Gothic Knights scored one run. Bariso reached base with a walk and later scored on an error.
NJCU’s two runs in the third inning made the score 8-3. Bariso recorded a double that brought home Ginter and Mucerino. Rowan registered four runs in the fourth. Labas and Minch each produced a RBI double. Escudero knocked in two runs with a double.
