GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept Ursinus College, 6-2 and 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Profs have won 15 straight games.
Rowan is 16-5 overall while Ursinus drops to 8-10 on the season. Right-hander Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) was the winning pitcher in the first contest. Minix pitched four relief innings and only allowed three hits. She (6-3) struck out five batters. Righty Erika Knorr (sr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) went the final two innings and right-hander Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) threw the first. Caitlin Whelan (fr. Stanhope, PA/Pope John XXIII Reg.) took the loss. Whelan (2-6) gave up four earned runs and had four strikeouts.
For the Profs, second baseman Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) totaled two hits (two at bats), a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) went two for three with one RBI and one run scored. Designated hitter Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) produced two hits (two at bats), a double, one RBI and one run scored. First baseman Ashlie Gaynor (jr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) and catcher Sam Stevens (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) each had one RBI.
Catcher Rachael Vietheer (jr. Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) was two for four for the Bears. Outfielder Samantha Lowes (so. Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan) had one double and one RBI. First baseman Allison Pfrommer (so. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) recorded a solo home run. Outfielder Jennilyn Weber (so. Valley View, PA/Tri-Valley) scored one run.
Rowan led 4-0 after the first inning. Minch knocked in the first two runs with a single up the middle. Shortstop Jenny Arcella (fr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and Roselle scored after they had reached base with a single. Minch later came home on an error and Gaynor had a RBI double. The Profs added one run in the third. Minch led off with a double to left center field. Landi followed with a double that plated Minch.
Pfrommer put Ursinus on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with a solo shot. In the bottom of the sixth, Roselle plated third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) with a single to right center. The Bears scored one run in the seventh. Weber walked and crossed the plate on Lowes’ double.
In the second game, Singer went the distance on the mound for the victory. She (10-2) scattered four hits and only gave up one unearned run. Weber (5-4) had the loss.
Right fielder Lauren Davis (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) and Landi each had one hit and one RBI. Arcella recorded a double and scored one run. Roselle and Minch each tallied a hit while Gaynor scored one run.
For Ursinus, third baseman Kristen Gallagher (sr. Newtown Square, PA/Newtown Square) was two for three with a double and one run scored. Catcher Emelie McFarland (so. Sykesville, MD/Century) and Vietheer each had one hit in three trips to the plate. Second baseman Cassie Brown (jr. Warminster, PA/Archbishop Wood) posted one RBI.
In the bottom of the first, Arcella doubled to right field. With two outs, Landi singled up the middle and Arcella came home. The Bears tied the score in the second inning. Gallagher led off with a single. She went to second on a bunt and advanced to third on an error. Brown’s sacrifice fly scored Gallagher. The Profs took the lead, 2-1 in the bottom half. Gaynor walked and moved to second on a sac bunt by Leskanic. A ground out advanced Gaynor to third and she crossed the plate on Davis’ single to left field.
