Rowan Wins Two Games at The College of New Jersey, 5-0 and 5-1

EWING, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won two games, 5-0 and 5-1 at New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent The College of New Jersey on Tuesday.

The Profs have a 26-9 record with a 12-4 NJAC mark. The Lions are 22-12 overall and 8-8 in the conference.

Right-hander Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct. NJ/East Brunswick) pitched her sixth shutout on the season in the opener. Singer (15-5) only allowed four hits and totaled six strikeouts. Lauren Fitzsimmons (jr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) was the losing pitcher. In 4.2 innings, she (7-3) gave up four hits and five unearned runs.

Left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) paced the Profs with a double, three RBIs and one run scored. Catcher Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) contributed with two hits in four at bats, a home run and two RBIs. First baseman Stephanie Labas (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) went two for three. Second baseman Jenny Arcella (fr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and center fielder Megan Becker (jr. Collingdale, PA/Academy Park) added one hit (two at bats) and one run scored apiece. Right fielder Lauren Davis (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) scored one run.

For the Lions, left fielder Crystal Lee (jr. Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) was three for three at the plate. Third baseman Kelly Hommen (so. Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) had a double.

All of Rowan’s runs came in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Roselle drove in three runs with a double to right center field. Arcella, Becker and Davis all scored. Veneziano followed with a two run shot which was her sixth homer this year.

In the second contest, righty Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) registered the win. Minix (11-4) scattered seven hits and the one run allowed was unearned. Pitcher Alex Carisone (fr. Branchburg, NJ/Rutgers-Prep) took the loss. In six innings, she (8-5) allowed five hits and five unearned runs.

Labas led the Profs with a double and three RBIs. Roselle produced one hit in four at bats and two runs scored. Veneziano was one for two with two runs scored. Davis chipped in with two hits in three trips to the plate. Shortstop Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) scored one run.

TCNJ right fielder Colleen Cawley (sr. Riverton, NJ/Holy Cross) went two for three with one RBI . Center fielder Liz Huttner (so. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) contributed with two hits in three at bats and a double. Designated player Caitlyn Seamster (sr. Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) and first baseman Katelyn Congilose (jr. Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) each added one hit (three at bats). Shortstop Kristen Lake (fr. Readington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) tallied a double.

The Profs went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Roselle led off with a single and Veneziano followed with a walk. Minch was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Labas reached base on a fielder’s choice, scoring Veneziano and Roselle came home on an error. Rowan had a 5-0 lead after three runs in the second. Labas knocked in all three runs with a double to right center. Roselle, Veneziano and Minch each crossed the plate. TCNJ’s lone run came in the top of the fifth inning with a RBI single by Cawley.

Rowan ends the regular season at home on Saturday, April 30 against New Jersey City University at 1 p.m.
