UNION, NJ – The Rowan University softball team recorded two shutouts over New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Kean University, 11-0 and 9-0 on Friday. Both games ended after five innings because of the eight-run rule.
The doubleheader was moved to Friday because of the forecast for inclement weather on Saturday. The Profs are 24-9 overall and 10-4 in the conference. The Cougars have a 9-21 record with a 7-7 NJAC mark.
Right-hander Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) only allowed four hits in the first contest. It was her fifth shutout on the season. She (14-5) struck out five batters. Righty Cortney Smyth (sr. Abington, PA/Abington) took the loss. Smyth (4-12) pitched 2.1 innings and was relieved by right-hander Rebecca Rotola (fr. Linden, NJ/Linden).
Rowan shortstop Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) totaled two hits (three at bats), two doubles, five RBIs and two runs scored. Left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ’Sparta) went four for four and scored three runs. Second baseman Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) contributed with four hits in four at bats and one RBI. Catcher Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) collected three hits (three at bats), one RBI and three runs scored. First baseman Stephanie Labas (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) had a home run. Right fielder Lauren Davis (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) and third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) each added one hit and one run scored.
For Kean, shortstop Alicia Banz (jr. Carteret, NJ/Carteret), third baseman Courtney Melchionna (so. Linden, NJ/Linden) and catcher Nicole Scarillo (sr. South Amboy, NJ/South Amboy) each had one hit in two at bats. Banz’s hit was a double. First baseman Katie Yard (sr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) went one for one.
In the first inning, Roselle led off with a double and later scored on an error. Minch drove in Veneziano with a double. Landi’s single up the middle, scored Minch. The Profs had two runs in the second. Roselle crossed the plate on a sac bunt by Minch and Veneziano went home on an error. Rowan was ahead 10-0 after five runs in the third inning. Veneziano drove in Davis with a single to left field. Minch knocked in three runs with a double and she scored on an error. Labas’ solo shot came in the fifth inning.
In the second game, right-hander Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) threw four innings and only allowed four hits. She (10-4) registered four strikeouts. Righty Erika Knorr (sr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) pitched the final inning and did not allowed a hit. Right-hander Samantha Sacco (so. Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) had the loss on the mound. She (1-1) went 1.1 innings and Rotola pitched 2.2.
Labas compiled two hits (three at bats), three RBIs, a home run and two runs scored. Landi registered two hits in three at bats, a home run and three RBIs. Roselle produced two hits (three at bats) and two runs scored. Veneziano chipped in with two hits (three bats), a triple, one RBI and one run scored. Minch added one hit (two at bats) and two runs scored. Center fielder Megan Becker (jr. Collingdale, PA/Academy Park) had two hits in three trips to the plate. Leskanic tallied one hit (two at bats) and one run scored.
Kean left fielder Sandra Binkiewicz (fr. Belleville, NJ/Belleville) went two for two. Right fielder Megan Cegielski (sr. Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and second baseman Katie Schuh (so. Mt. Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) each had one hit (three at bats).
Rowan went up 3-0 in the first inning. Roselle had a leadoff single to right field. She moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a ground out. Minch got on base when she was hit by a pitch. Labas recorded a homer down the left field line. It was her seventh home run of the year. The Profs scored six more runs in the second. Leskanic came home on an error after she had a single to get on base. Veneziano’s triple down the right field line scored a run. She went home on a wild pitch. Minch had a single and Labas reached on an error. Landi recorded three RBIs with a homer to left field.
Rowan plays at The College of New Jersey on Tuesday, April 26 in a 3 p.m. conference doubleheader.
