GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept conference opponent Rutgers-Newark, 9-1 and 13-1 on Wednesday. Both games ended after five innings because of the eight-run rule.
The Profs are 22-9 overall and 8-4 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The Scarlet Raiders have a 7-21 record with a 2-10 conference mark.
Right-hander Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) was the winning pitcher in the first game. Singer (13-5) only allowed two hits and had four strikeouts. Lefty Brianna Alicchio (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) took the loss.
Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) led the way with a home run (two at bats) and three RBIs. Left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) contributed with two hits in three at bats, one RBI and one run scored. Second baseman Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) produced two hits (three at bats) and two runs scored. Catcher Sam Stevens (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) chipped in with two hits (three at bats), a double, one RBI and one run scored. First baseman Stephanie Labas (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) recorded a home run. Right fielder Lauren Davis (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) added one hit in two at bats, one RBI and one run scored.
For the Scarlet Raiders, first baseman Monica Bagan (so. Wallingtoin, NJ/Wallington) was one for two at the plate. Catcher Gabby Spinella (fr. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) had one hit in one trip to the plate. Third baseman Monica Liotto (so. Morris Plains, NJ/Parsippany Hills) tallied one RBI.
The Profs scored their first run in the third inning. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) walked and advanced two bases on an error and scored on the throw. Rowan compiled eight runs in the fourth. Landi crossed the plate when Davis was hit by a pitch and the bases were loaded. Leskanic’s sacrifice fly scored Stevens. Roselle plated designated player Megan Becker (jr. Collingdale, PA/Academy Park) with a single. Veneziano recorded a three run homer and Labas registered a solo shot. Stevens had a RBI double that brought Landi home. Rutgers-Newark’s run came in the top of the fifth. Liotto had a sac fly that scored pinch runner Sadie Logozio (fr. Fords, NJ/Woodbridge).
Right-hander Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) threw three scoreless innings for the victory in the nightcap. She (9-4) gave up four hits and struck out four batters. Righty Erika Knorr (sr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) pitched the last two innings and had four strikeouts. Right-hander Angela Riscinti (so. Linden, NJ/Linden) had the loss on the mound.
Labas collected two hits (four at bats), two RBIs and two runs scored. Shortstop Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) chipped in with two hits (four at bats), one RBI and two runs scored. Davis produced three hits (four at bats), two RBIs and two runs scored. Stevens tallied one hit (two at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. Designated player Ashlie Gaynor (jr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.), Becker and Leskanic all had one hit and one RBI. Veneziano added two hits in two at bats, one RBI and one run scored. Second baseman Nicole Escudero (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) was two for four with one RBI and one run scored.
Shortstop Carrie Wan (fr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) went three for three with one RBI. Second baseman Stacey Jacovinich (fr. Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge) had two hits in two at bats.
Rowan had a 7-0 advantage after the first inning. Minch brought Roselle home with a bunt single. Labas’ single drove in Minch and Stevens recorded a two RBI double. Davis knocked in Stevens with a hit. Escudero crossed the plate on a ground and Veneziano scored Davis with a single. The Profs had one run in the third when Davis came home on a passed ball.
The Profs tacked on five more runs in the top of the fifth. Labas singled in Veneziano and Gaynor plated Minch with a double. Becker followed with a RBI single and Escudero’s hit scored Gaynor. Davis singled home Becker. In the bottom half, Logozio singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Wan drove in Logozio with a hit.
Rowan travels to Kean University on Saturday, April 23 for a NJAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
