Rowan Splits Doubleheader Against Montclair State University

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader against Montclair State University on Sunday. The Red Hawks had a 4-1 win in the opener while the Profs took the second, 10-7.

Montclair State has a 21-5 record with a 9-1 NJAC mark. Rowan’s win in the second game ended MSU’s 17-game win streak. The Profs are 20-9 overall and 6-4 in the conference.

Right-hander Alex Hill (fr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) pitched a complete game for the Red Hawks’ victory. Hill (12-2) only allowed four hits and one earned run. She totaled 10 strikeouts. Righty Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) suffered the loss. Singer (12-5) gave up six hits and three earned runs in 4.1 innings.

Hill also had three hits in three at bats, one RBI and one run scored. Designated player Kelli O’Brien (so. Edison, NJ/Edison) contributed with two hits (four at bats), a double, one RBI and one run scored. Right fielder Stephanie Szeliga (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) added one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Third baseman Dana Amato (fr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and pinch runner Jamie Paulino (so. Linden, NJ/Linden) each scored one run.

For Rowan, catcher Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) had two hits in three trips to the plate. Left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJSparta) recorded a home run. Right fielder Lauren Davis (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) added one hit (three at bats).

MSU scored three runs in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. O’Brien drove in Paulino with a single and Amato crossed the plate on an error. Hill’s RBI single to left field scored O’Brien. In the third inning, the Red Hawks went up 1-0 after Szeliga plated Hill with a single. The Profs tied the score in the bottom of the fourth with Roselle’s solo shot.

In the second contest, right-hander Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) earned the win in relief. In four innings, Minix (8-4) scattered seven hits and allowed four earned runs. Singer pitched the final 1.1 innings for her second save. Righty Jamie Miller (so. Spotswood, NJ/St. John Vianney) had the loss on the mound. Miller (9-3) went two innings.

Veneziano collected three hits (four at bats), a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. First baseman Stephanie Labas (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) produced two hits (three at bats), a double, a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Roselle contributed with three hits (three at bats), a double, one RBI and two runs scored.

Second baseman Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and center fielder Megan Becker (jr. Collingdale, PA/Academy Park) had one hit and one RBI apiece. Shortstop Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.), designated player Ashlie Gaynor (jr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.), third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and Landi all scored one run.

Montclair State center fielder Leslie Gonzalez went three for five with a triple and one run scored. Szeliga tallied two hits in three at bats, a double, two RBIs and one run scored. Amato had a home run and two RBIs. Second baseman Katie Muglia (fr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) and O’Brien each posted one hit and one RBI. Muglia also scored a run. Left fielder Shannon Mozek (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and shortstop Priscilla Camacho (jr. Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) both added one hit (two at bats) and scored one run.

The Red Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 3-1 advantage. Mozek led off with a walk and later scored on an error. Szeliga came home on a fielder’s choice with Muglia at bat. The Profs totaled six runs in the third to take the lead, 7-3. The inning started with a single up the middle by Roselle. Veneziano followed with a homer to right center. Minch tripled to right and Landi walked. They came home on Labas’ double to center field. Becker’s sacrifice fly scored Labas. Veneziano drove in Gaynor with a single.

MSU pulled within two runs (7-5) after Szeliga recorded a two RBI double in the fifth. Both teams scored two runs in the sixth that made the score 9-7. In the top half, Roselle crossed the plate on Landi’s hit and Labas walked with the bases loaded, scoring Veneziano. Amato recorded a two run homer to left field in the bottom of the inning. In the seventh, Roselle had a RBI double for the Profs’ final run.

Rowan is home again on Tuesday, April 19 against Rutgers-Newark at 3 p.m.
