Rowan Takes Two Against Richard Stockton, 15-3 (5 inn.) and 9-5

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won two games, 15-3 in five innings and 9-5, against conference opponent Richard Stockton College on Sunday.

The Profs are 18-7 overall and 4-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Ospreys have an 11-11 record with a 1-5 conference mark.

In the first game, right-hander Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) was the winning pitcher. She tossed five innings, allowing three earned runs on two hits. Singer struck out six hitters. Righty Brittany Giacomelli (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) took the loss. She (4-4) gave up eight runs, two earned in 2.2 innings.

The Profs’ offense was led by first baseman Stephanie Labas (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) with two hits (three at bats), a double, a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) went three for three with two runs scored. Left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) registered three hits (three at bats), two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Designated player Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) added two hits (three at bats), a double, four RBIs and one run scored.

Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) produced two hits (three at bats), two RBIs and two runs scored. Second baseman Jenny Arcella (fr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) was one for four with two runs scored and one RBI. Shortstop Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) chipped in with one hit (three at bats) and two runs scored. Catcher Sam Stevens (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Absegami) crossed the plate once.

For the Ospreys, catcher Nicole Chabak (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) compiled one hit (two at bats), a home run, three RBIs and one run scored. Center fielder Jessica Goncalves (so. Union, NJ/Union) went one for three. Right fielder Katelyn Derewecki (jr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and third baseman Danielle Accardi (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/Mount St. Mary) scored one run apiece.

Richard Stockton went ahead 3-0 on a three run homer by Chabak in the top of the first inning. Rowan cut the deficit to one (3-2) with two runs in the second. With two outs, Labas doubled and Leskanic followed with a single. They both came home on Roselle’s double to center field.

The Profs broke the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the third. Veneziano hit a two out single and stole second. Landi followed with a walk. The bases were loaded after Becker struck out but reached base on a passed ball.

Labas hit a grand slam over the right center field fence. Leskanic got on with a single and Roselle knocked her in with a double down the right field line. Arcella’s single up the middle plated Roselle. Minch and Stevens walked to load the bases. Veneziano followed with a walk that allowed Arcella to score. Landi’s single up the middle brought Minch home.

In the fourth, Roselle walked and later scored on an error. Arcella crossed the plate on a single by Veneziano. Landi recorded a three run double to left field that drove in Veneziano, Stevens and Minch.

In the nightcap, Singer earned the win in four relief innings. She (12-3) only gave up three hits and one earned run. Accardi had the loss on the mound. In 4.2 innings, she (1-1) surrendered eight hits and five earned runs.

Veneziano registered two hits (four at bats) and three RBIs. Leskanic contributed with two hits in four trips to the plate and scored two runs. Roselle totaled three hits (five at bats), two doubles, one RBI and one run scored. Arcella and Landi each added one hit and one RBI.

For the Ospreys, shortstop Joey Afflitto (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick) was three for four with a double and two runs scored. Second baseman Danielle Kohen (fr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) had two RBIs with one hit (four at bats). Derewecki went two for three with two RBIs. Center fielder Rachel Forte (fr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) added one RBI and one run scored.

The Profs got on the scoreboard with one run in the third inning. Leskanic singled and later came home on a passed ball. In the bottom half, Richard Stockton went up 3-1. Catcher Vicki DeGaetano (jr. Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) scored on a ground out with Kohen at bat. Derewecki record a two RBI single to center, scoring Forte and Afflitto. Both teams had one run in the fourth inning. Landi singled home pinch runner Nicole Escudero (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee). First baseman Ally Roma (jr. West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Reg.) led off with a double and went to third on a wild pitch. She came home on Forte’s ground out.

Rowan took the lead 5-4 in the fifth. Roselle drove in Leskanic with a double to left center. Arcella had a RBI double that scored Roselle. Veneziano’s single sent home Minch. The Profs had four more runs in the sixth. Designated player Megan Becker (jr. Collingdale, PA/Academy Park) and Veneziano each recorded a two RBI single. The Ospreys scored one run in the bottom of the seventh. Afflitto had a leadoff double and she crossed the plate on Kohen’s double.

Rowan travels to conference opponent Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday, April 12 for two games starting at 3 p.m.
