VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Rowan University softball team dropped its final two games at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast on Saturday. Roanoke College edged Rowan, 4-3 in nine innings and Randolph-Macon College won 5-1 in the second game.
Roanoke’s Gretchen Wolfe (sr. New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) was the winning pitcher in relief. Wolfe came into the game in the eighth inning. Right-hander Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) went nine innings for the loss. She struck out 11 batters.
The score was tied at one after seven innings. Roanoke and Rowan each had one run in the eighth inning. First baseman Ashlie Gaynor (jr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) drove in left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) for the Profs’ run. Gaynor ended the game with two hits in four at bats. Designated player Lisa Scruggs (sr. Madison Heights, VA/Lynchburg Christian) crossed the plate on a ground out for the Maroons’ run.
Rowan went up 3-2 in the top of the ninth. Right fielder Lauren Davis (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) doubled in third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford). Roanoke tied the score when third baseman Katherine Kouri (jr. Rockville, VA/Patrick Henry) came home on a fielder’s choice. Right fielder Hollee Warlitner (so. Clifton Forge, VA/Alleghany) drove in the winning run with a single.
The Maroons got on the scoreboard first with one run in the bottom of the third inning. Scruggs had a RBI single that scored center fielder Leona Rainey (so. Sandston, VA/Mills Godwin). Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) singled in pinch runner Jenny Arcella (fr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) in the fifth to tie the score.
Randolph-Macon’s winning pitcher was righty Kristen Dize (so. Onancock, VA/Nandua). She only gave up one hit and one unearned run. Rowan right-hander Jamie Minix (jr. Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) started and pitched 5.2 innings.
The Yellow Jackets led 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Catcher Laura Bauer (jr. New Kent, VA/New Kent) singled in the run. Rowan’s lone run came in the fourth inning. Second baseman Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) reached base on an error and later came home on an error. Randolph-Macon pulled away with four runs in the sixth. The first two runs scored on second baseman Lacey Berry’s (so. Tappahannock, VA/Essex) single. First baseman Alex Gregoire (so. Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) knocked in two runs with a double.
Rowan (1-3) heads to Kissimmee, Florida for the Rebel Spring Games during spring break. The softball plays on Saturday, March 12 against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 3 and 5 p.m. respectively.
