HAVERFORD, PA – The Rowan University softball team won the first game of a doubleheader, 10-2 at Haverford College on Wednesday. The second game was suspended after four innings because of darkness with the Profs ahead 10-3.
Rowan (12-5) has an 11-game win streak. Right-hander Amanda Singer (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) was the winner in the opener. Singer (8-2) pitched six innings and only gave up three hits and one earned run. She struck out six batters. Righty Erika Knorr (sr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) was on the mound for the final inning and she had two strikeouts. Right-hander Lisa Karmel (sr. Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) took the loss. Karmel (4-4) started and went three innings. She allowed six hits and three earned runs.
Shortstop Ashley Minch (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) paced the Profs with three hits (four at bats), three RBIs, a double and one run scored. First baseman Stephanie Labas (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) was two for three with two RBIs and a home run. Center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) chipped in with two hits (five at bats), one RBI and a homer. Left fielder Casey Roselle (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) scored two runs and had one home run. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (jr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and first baseman Ashlie Gaynor (jr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) added one RBI apiece.
For Haverford (5-14), center fielder Elizabeth Newman (fr. Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg.) went two for two and scored one run. Second baseman Marina Zambrotta (sr. Newport, RI/Rogers) tallied one hit (three at bats) and one RBI. Catcher Jen DiCandilo (fr. Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) had one hit while right fielder Jordan Nieusma (fr. Oakton, VA/Oakton) tallied one RBI. Third baseman Maggie Cronin (sr. Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) scored a run.
In the first game, Rowan got on the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the second inning. Designated player Megan Becker (jr. Collingdale, PA/Academy Park) walked and went to second on a sac bunt by catcher Sam Stevens (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.). She advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on Minch’s single up the middle. Labas followed with a two run homer to left center. The Profs scored two runs in the third when Minch had a double to right center field. She knocked in right fielder Lauren Davis (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) and Roselle who reached base on a single and error respectively.
Haverford’s first run came in the bottom of the fifth. Nieusma walked with the bases loaded, scoring Newman. Rowan had a solo shot by Veneziano in the sixth. In the bottom half, Zambrotta singled in Cronin.
Roselle led off the seventh with a home run. Designated player Ashley Landi (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) followed with a double and later crossed the plate on a ground out by Gaynor. Leskanic plated pinch runner Nicole Escudero (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) with a single and she later scored on a wild pitch.
Rowan plays at home on Thursday, March 31 against Ursinus College at 3 p.m.
